Delaying graduation is as easy as pie in many countries...if she doesn't show up, she (likely) phones in her diploma....happens all the time. Odd that a school would offer vacation time before the finals/graduation.

Again, people from countries that have problems across many fronts have gladly abandon those things that at one time might have been considered as a good reason to return, but not so much any more given today's ease of electronic communications.

Well, depending on how things go; she is fancying the thought of doing a master's here possibly.

She would need a completely different visa for that.

Might have more success trying for that.

November 14th, 2013: She's here!

December 12th, 2013: Picked up marriage license.

and a fair bit of cash.

Depends on what visa

Both are non immigrant, so similar issues apply.

Don't over complicate this. I've done the B2 and the process is easy as pie. Do you have $165 to blow for the visa if denied? Then there is no reason you shouldn't apply. Your GF should walk in expecting a denial and be happy if she gets approved. The B2 is entirely based on the interview with little need for documents with complete discretion of the consular officer. Just because it's supposed to work this way doesn't mean that is how the interview will work in real life as I learned; in my case the CO invited me to the interview which according to other VJ posters never happens and is not allowed under any circumstance....lie. She should just be confidant and tell the truth. Return tickets only help with CPB at POE. If you think a letter will help do it; I did one but the CO didn't even want to see it. You can apply and interview as many times as you like as a different CO may have a different opinion and approve her and a tourist visa doesn't affect on a K-1 or CR1 if that's what your asking.

Have you been to a B2 interview?

Have you been to a B2 interview?

Yes. I was invited to come inside when the CO found out I was waiting outside. The CO asked me more questions than the wife.

It's not normal that a B2 applicant can be accompanied but it can happen. An co worker in India told me you can go to a B2 with your girlfriend in New Delhi but I haven't verified this. The CO's seem to have broad discretion in the process with few hard set rules.

You are extrapolating your unusual situation and assuming it is the norm.

Most 'interviews' last a few minutes and the decision has been made well in advance.

Ukraine is very tough on issuing tourist visas, period. It all will depend on the mood of a consulate officer questioning her. It's that win/loose situation where you really cant do much. My tourist visa application was denied (5 years ago). They pretty much know whether they give it to you or not before you even get to the window. Long story short, I was in the USA 3 times on student J1 visa before applying for a tourist one, as well as had multiple tourist visas to Italy which non of them ever been overstayed. I was in college back then as well. Good LUCK!

At the same time, if money is not an issue, there's no reason not to apply. Denials are not prejudicial and may give an idea of what is missing. Or they may get approved.

But young/single girl going to meet boy in NY. Not really the best odds of approval.
