Buy a refundable ticket?

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

If everyone generally agrees that having a return plane ticket doesn't prove squat, then I'd probably hold off on it.

She is from a practical point leaving it very late to get a ticket at a decent price.

The Consulates say not to buy a ticket until you have a visa anyway.

This is from another US Consulate website but still relevant

http://romania.usembassy.gov/visas/visa_faq.html#Question13

  1. Should I purchase my airline tickets in advance to prove that I really want a visa and to validate my destination?

No. Do not purchase airline tickets before obtaining a visa. Possession of pre-paid airline tickets to the U.S. will not be a factor in the consular officer’s decision. The only exception to this is if you are applying for a transit visa and are traveling through the U.S. on your way to another destination.

Done with K1, AOS and ROC

I figured purchasing a return flight would just be another supporting factor that she intends on returning. I'm just thinking with the mindset that any bit may help.

I don't have any experience with this, that's why I'm here.

When thinking of things that may help, you need to think from the point of view of the interviewing officer who is deciding whether or not to give her a visa.

November 14th, 2013: She's here!

December 12th, 2013: Picked up marriage license.

December 14th, 2013: Wedding

Here is a list of all the documents that she plans on submitting as evidence that she will return.

  • Official Documents from her University (dates, and gruaduation date)
  • Bank Accounts (2 Personal, 1 Scholarship Account)
  • Official copies of Registration of her place of residence in Ukraine
  • Documents that her family has property in Ukraine (Not sure if that will help)
  • Proof of Visa's to other countries, dates traveled, and dates returned to Ukraine.

Is there anything else that will help that we might be leaving out?

A round trip airline ticket proves one (and only one) thing: somebody bought a RT ticket. That's all. An airline ticket cannot control the actions of a human being. A RT ticket is NOT proof that someone would leave the US (hint: if it were such proof, then its mystical qualities would be listed as a requirement on our embassies' websites for those applying for a tourist visa....however, you will note that no specific documents are listed as a requirement except the DS 160).

Countless thousands, if not millions, have bought a RT ticket and promptly threw it away after clearing baggage claim. Given the current state of affairs in the Ukraine, her chances of getting a B2 visa are roughly the same as the sun burning out tomorrow.

First and last seem relevant.

The documents will matter less than her story and overall situation.

I have a question, you say she needs to go back to graduate. What does that mean? It is attending graduation? If she doesn't attend she won't graduate? Or is it something else?

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

People from countries in which there are numerous problems have gladly abandoned studies, family and bank accounts to live in the US. The applicant has to convince a VO otherwise....no document can do that.

So it's all based solely on her performance in her interview?

She needs to be back for final exams or else she won't pass and therefore won't graduate.

All right, so that is a good tie.

But visas are good for years, what would happen after she graduates?

Can you visit her in Ukraine? It might be an easier feat.

ROC from CR-1 visa (Green Card expiration date was Nov 24th 2016)

Link to the evidence I submitted. Be sure to send evidence spanning your entire marriage (especially for K-1) or as far back as you can. Just one or two bank statements will not cut it. I primarily focused on the two years of living here since I came in on a CR-1. If you don't have the fundamentals (i.e. joint accounts/policies), you can explain why in the covering letter. E.g. "While we do not have joint utilities, we both contribute to them from our joint bank account".

September 26th 2016: I-751 package sent to CSC

September 28th 2016: Package delivered
September 30th 2016: Check cashed
October 3rd 2016: NOA1 received with receipt date of 09/28/16
November 3rd 2016: Biometrics received with appointment date of 11/14/16.
November 14th 2016: Attended biometrics appointment
October 30th 2017: Infopass appointment to get I-551 stamp
February 26th 2018: I-751 case number (aka the NOA1 receipt number) becomes trackable
March 14th 2018: Submitted service request due to being outside of processing time.

March 15th 2018: ROC approved. 535 days (1 year, 5 months and 17 days)

March 29th 2018: Card being produced

April 4th 2018: Card mailed out

April 6th 2018: Card in hand. Has incorrect "resident since" date. Submitted service request on I-751 case (typographical error on permanent resident card) and an I-90 online.

April 2018 - August 7th 2018: Tons of service requests, emails and now senator involvement to get my corrected green card back because what the heck, USCIS. Also some time in May I sent a letter to Potomac telling them I want to withdraw my I-90 since CSC were handling it.

August 8th 2018: Card in production thanks to the direct involvement of Senator Sherrod Brown's team

August 13th 2018: Card mailed

August 15th 2018: Card in hand with correct date. :joy:

October 31st 2018: Potomac sends out a notice stating they have closed out my I-90 per my request. Yay for no duplicate card drama.
