  1. 1. What do you think about using the bodies of aborted and/or miscarried babies as fuel?

    • I'm comfortable with it. Life begins at birth, not conception, so those 'bodies' are nothing more than useful sources of fuel as far as I'm concerned.
    • I'm not comfortable with it. Life begins at conception or some point soon after but well before birth. Those remains deserve the same respect and consideration given to the remains of babies who die at or shortly after birth.
  2. 2. 15,500 fetal remains were incinerated by 27 NHS trusts over the last two years.

    • That's over FIVE TIMES as many lives lost in the 9/11 attacks.
    • They're fetal remains, who cares?

The bodies of thousands of aborted and miscarried babies were incinerated as clinical waste, with some even used to heat hospitals, an investigation has found.

Ten NHS trusts have admitted burning foetal remains alongside other rubbish while two others used the bodies in ‘waste-to-energy’ plants which generate power for heat.

Last night the Department of Health issued an instant ban on the practice which health minister Dr Dan Poulter branded ‘totally unacceptable.’

At least 15,500 foetal remains were incinerated by 27 NHS trusts over the last two years alone.

I have trouble believing this. I don't think bodily tissue makes good fuel. And miscarried fetuses are tiny. So, is it just that they were burning the trash that is the problem? This fuel angle seems like a big leap, designed to shock.

How else are they to get rid of it? Is a landfill better?

Cremation? Let the parents decide?

Okay, so you want to make a separate trash bin for uterine material that can be burned?

I am sure the "parent" of an abortion doesn't want to make decisions about how to deal with its disposal.

So very liberal of you........ So now a Miscarried baby is an it Devoid of any emotion over death. Perhaps a funeral is in better order.

It makes sense. Human remains are not exothermic, so the heat angle is just something to create knee-jerk responses.

I immediately thought the same thing, about how to extract energy from burning flesh, it might well mean capturing the energy used to incinerate rather than just let it escape.

This whole subject is a little strange in that if we accept that unborn humans have no value... what does it matter how the bodies are dealt with?

Any society which allows the destroying of such life (void of any compelling justification) should certainly not be expected to treat the remains with dignity.

That is actually not a question to society in general, so much as a question to the families and/or individuals involved.

Some families or individuals may choose burial, other cremation, others may consider donating the organs of the deceased to someone in the UNOS list. The definition of dignity is subjective, as is the notion of compelling justification.

Let us be generous and say 50 btu's each, that would be 750,000 btu's.

Say 65% efficiency, that would be the equivalent of 200kw.

Where I am 11c a KW so $22.

My guess is that the energy contribution is a lot lower.

Hardly worth the hassle.

But back to aborted fetuses, there are no organs to donate, and generally there is not enough tissue to even cremate.

Of all the ethical dilemmas involving abortion, what to do with the remains is not really a big issue to me. I wouldn't really encourage giving the remains back to the families.

You can donate tissue for stem cell research.
