BELIEFS ABOUT THE POOR ARE MIRED IN FLAWED STEREOTYPES

The writer in the article you posted has an issue with Paul Ryan using the term "inner city" From the article:

I was merely pointing out the double standard. Obama, Sharpton, and Jesse Jackson routinely use that term when it suits their narrative. For some reason the writer didn't point that out. She must be a racist.

My post was not aimed towards you. Of course sometimes the context in which a word is used can have a completely different meaning.

Al Sharpton......

wow, I remember 20 years ago when he lied about a girl being raped, just to promote himself and his personal agenda (and his wallet)....

and now he is a respected civil rights leader with a show on MSNBC..:rofl:

Well, ask yourself, are we respecting him for fighting for civil rights or for crying wolf?

Bush used cocaine but people still respected him as a President.

I don't have a problem with inner city or urban area. Here's the issue:

When Obama, Jesse or Al use the word, they're talking to who? Black people. If hard work is utilized, it's along the lines of go to school, work hard, and you can achieve great things. This is what they say when they speak to black people as a whole. The core message is a good one. Now, let's look at what the GOP does.

When Paul Ryan or anyone else uses the same language, it comes off as insulting because they say things like lazy blacks, no work ethic, or black people on welfare scam the system. According to them, the opportunity is there, we're just too lazy or stupid to understand it. This is why the GOP has to spend millions of dollars trying to connect with minority voters. They can't seem to grasp the simple concept of finding out what those voters and and trying to work with them.

Paul Ryan used words like lazy blacks, no work ethic, or black people on welfare scamming the system? Only thing I could find was this quote:

”We have got this tailspin of culture, in our inner cities in particular, of men not working and just generations of men not even thinking about working or learning the value and the culture of work, and so there is a real culture problem here that has to be dealt with…you need to get involved, you need to get involved yourself, whether through a good mentor program or some religious charity, whatever it is to make a difference. And that’s how we resuscitate our culture.”

Doesn't seem racist to me. Actually, I think he hit the nail on the head. He didn't mention race at all. There's a real problem of generational poverty in this country. Some people point that out, and instead of offering any solutions, they claim it's racism. Pretty sad really. Can't fix a problem until folks admit there is one. Until then, it'll be generation after generation blaming their problems on racism with Al and Jesse only happy to help perpetuate the problem.

I was talking about the GOP in general. Here are some of their greatest hits:

We know there are issues. But it's a mixture of the two, not just one or the other. The institutionalized racism is either left out or focused on too much.

But wasn't Nagasaki propped up by government as well? I think it took about until the late 1950s for it to reach its prewar population.

Yes and that is a great point, Japan is like the Lawn mower, we Pulled the cord and it was up and running in no time.

IN our American examples, we have mowers that were running fine and one by one they are sputtering to a halt.

I agree with that. But at some point some of these folks need to start taking responsibility. Until that happens, they'll be living in poverty for generation after generation, and I'm not just talking about black people. The white folks living off govt. handouts for generations don't have the luxury of blaming race. From my experience they have to get creative about the reasons for their lot in life. Usually they blame their parents.

As for the links, I can post a bunch of racist quotes from Democrats if you'd like. We can do this all night.

Here's my point. You can't rally support coming into a neighborhood and calling the folks there lazy bums. There are lazy folks in all races. When you say inner city, everyone knows you're talking about black cities. When you say the south side of Chicago, we know it's code for black neighborhoods. When was the last time a politician went to a poor white neighborhood and said lazy whites?

I know, I've blasted the Democrats here as well for their stupidity. You know of all people here, I give it to either side who deserves to get called out. As for all night, you know I don't stay up late during the week, one more hour and I'm in the bed wrapped up in my onesie!

Such a good point. We should all go to google and type in lazy, welfare, inner city, no good, moochers and see which races pop up first.

None of these words are used to describe or to generalize any other race than black.

I used to say African American, but now I just say black. Because we don't call white people European American. The problem is folks tend to generalize. That's why I get upset when as a black muslim I have to be held responsible for every act some terrorist douche bag commits and whatever crime a black person does, yet the same is never true when folks are gunned down.

I've seen some backwoods that I'm more afraid of than any urban neighborhoods.

People want to personalize what they see on TV. First kill all the TV"S, then kill all the lawyers.

NO, it is not odd at all.

If you think about in 1945 one city was destroyed by a atom bomb, the other was one of the nicest cities in the world, with a thriving economy, every expression of art, culture and architect.

Today one would think Detroit was the war-zone with the body count and the ground laid to waste.

Imagine if you would what Detroit would look like if there were no propping up by Gov't, the people alone were responsible for themselves and their city... scary thought huh?

The fathers of Detroit built a city from nothing and made it a shining example of human achievement.... in just a few decades it resembles a war zone complete with monthly body count.

The people of Detroit can not even maintain the gift that was handed to them.

Philadelphia, Birmingham, Baltimore, Memphis and others are up and coming examples of the same fate.

I thought you were not here.

I don't know why, but I swear you're like Clint Eastwood in Gran Turismo, that's how I see you.

Yeah I agree calling them lazy bums probably wont get the desired result. Good thing I'm not a politician. As far as lazy folks in all races, the only lazy bums I know personally are white. Almost all of them family members. Unfortunately for them, they can't blame it on their race, although I've heard them try.

 Onesie. That's funny

There's tough love and then there's being just plain offensive. If you can figure out how to employ the former without sinking into the latter, you're golden.

I try to keep it light. The lazy bums I know are all types. The ones that are black piss me off the most.

In some ways I am like the Clint Eastwood you saw talking to a chair.

It's not crazy to talk to a chair, it's only crazy when you answer back.

It must hurt to have a real life conversation with you. My comment was about places like Branson, Mo and the Ozarks. Places where folks like me can disappear without a trace, and no one cares. To this day, my family refuses to go out around there at night.

You can't compare our cities to yours. The advantages you have are too numerous to count. You actually believe we are on the same playing field and we squander what's given to us.

Murders per thousand people

Branson 11.6

Black (alone) population .5%

Apparently you are not the only Black avoiding Branson. :dancing:

So lets compare an equally *Black* city and the closest one I know of is Detroit which is perhaps the most African American city (major) in the country.

Murder per thousand

Detroit 48.2

Black (alone) population 81.4

Despite your fears, I bet your life is in much greater danger in Detroit than in Branson.
