#/(#€#/%%% The house not only has knob and tube, but the upgraded stuff is freaking aluminum!!!!!! It is like a fire death trap.

There's no problem with aluminum wiring unless it was terminated incorrectly. Granted I'd rather have copper myself, but terminated correctly and aluminum wiring works fine. I live in an apartment once that was built with aluminum wiring terminated incorrectly. I went around all the outlets and switches and fixed that problem.

House inspection specifically says "incorrect terminations." It is also kind of obvious from the pictures that whoever spliced the knob and tube into the new wiring had never read an electrical code manual, because they are not done correctly. Plus, there is also no point in only rewiring some of the house.

So they just wrapped aluminum wire around the copper ends in the knobs or stuck the aluminum into the spring connects on the outlets and switches. The later is easy to fix, the former says rewire back to breaker box.

All of a sudden the conduit ends and they just electric taped in the old wiring without so much as a junction box or solder (either of which would be acceptable under the code).

Part of the reason that we didn't realize the scale of the problem is that except for a line to a not used light in the basement, all the exposed basement wiring was in a conduit or not knob and tube. As soon as it gets to the wall, it appears to change and not well.

This appears to be a pretty common problem out there - you would not believe the amount of bad plumbing and electrical. New kitchen and bath remodels with old wiring pulled up to non-GFCI outlets practically inside of showers. *head desk*

Rather than running new wiring through the walls, a lot of them decided to just do conduit on the outside of plaster in bedrooms, etc. which I guess means they can't get FHA buyers.

I think maybe we are expecting a little too much from the region?

So easily seen, update so it looks right. In the wall, fudge, just tape it to the old #######, who's gonna know. I see the same thing being pulled in the cities to. Before requiring professional inspections, people got away with this type of stuff. But not so much any longer, as you're finding out. I take it the quote to fix is going to be pretty hefty.

I'll posit the rework was handled by a small crew of illegal aliens.

Ask for the receipt, from the seller, so that you can review it.
