Buses just suck. The last time I took one that wasn't a city bus was high school and that wasn't so great.

Tonight officially marks the time at which my Norwegian surpasses my Danish. Bad or good, I don't know yet. I'm good at it, but I worry that another professor won't be so forgiving of me having Danish intonations.

funny...they asked me at the interview if I spoke Danish since they need translators and Chinese...apparently I speak all the wrong languages lol

I probably missed something...how ? Are you taking some tests ? I wish I could hear the difference in intonations...does it have a lot of weight in the language ? I mean I know all languages are different in that sense but sometimes you can get away with it somewhat....

Buses do suck.....took 4x 10 hours on buses...I am pretty good on that one...flying next or train but no buses ever ever ever.

They do have a Danish extension class at NYU and there are a lot of Danes in the city, I'm surprised they haven't been able to find someone.

I'm taking an online Norwegian class towards my Norwegian major, but there are Skype exams and oral recordings I have to do.

Danish is a much flatter language with rough sounds - a lot of throat noises and I don't want to be politically incorrect, but many words are pronounced as someone with Down syndrome were speaking them. It is a correct and running joke that Danish sounds like you have a potato in your mouth.

Norwegian is not as bouncy as Swedish, but it is a much bouncier and sharper language than Danish. It is acceptable to use old Norwegian, which has more Danish in it, but it isn't taught in America as much. I feel more comfortable with it so I use it a bit more. For example you can use the new number system to say 32: trettito, thirty-two, which is more of an English feel to the numbering or you can use toogtredive, the old Danish way of saying two and thirty.

Can I get away with it? Yes for the moment, I am understandable but he actually thought I was using Danish words, which are much more slurred than the ones I was using. I can speak somewhere in the middle and both Danes and Norwegians understand me better than they would understand someone from the other country.

I love the old danish way....based on one number yes...but I do lol.

I bet they do have Danish people at NYU but I suppose they were testing me...same as when they asked if I would join their female soccer team...I said no. *shrug* won't lie but I did say I was open to learning another language.

ah I see about the Norwegian class..do you feel that it is more difficult having to do it over Skype and what not ? I tried doing Arabic over Skype with a good friend of mine but it was somewhat difficult.

The question about the soccer team was likely to find out how involved in extra-curricular activities you would be. They may want someone who wants to socialise with other staff members vs just someone who is there just to work.

I find that to be such an odd way to ask....I mean ok..I don't play soccer doesn't mean i would not be involved in anything....why not just ask ...usually I make a point in saying that I wanna be part of the community....

aaah hate interviews.

Because most people are passive aggressive and beat around the bush. Unless you're in the south. Then they tell you what they think but add "God bless their heart" afterwards, like that makes it okay.

Example:

That girl fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down, God bless her heart.

Say that in a southern accent and it's immensely entertaining. LOL

My new siggy is making me DIZZY.

I used to leave my ex-husband places. In return, during a fight he left me at restaurant with no way to pay the bill. We had a really healthy relationship, can't you tell?

My husband did this to me once at the very beginning of our relationship, but when I didn't call him begging for him to come back or run after him he seemed to realize his plan had backfired and ended up begging for forgiveness the next day. He's come a long way since then, but he was a bit of a douche at the beginning.

She's got to draw attention away from her cankles.

That's the very first thing I noticed, too. I mean, jeez.

USC who lived in Manabí, Ecuador with hubby from 2009 - 2013. Hubby became a naturalized American citizen in August 2016. Currently living together in northern Virginia.
