Since we are on the dog topic I have a question.

How do I stop a 1yr old dachshund from using my house as his toilet? I'm about to never let him out of the crate.

First question is are you this dog's master or just another member of the pack?

This requires you're truly the master of the dog and not just hanging out with the dog. Put the dog on a schedule, taking him outside on the regular schedule. When he does his business when you take him, or let him, out, give even a small training treat reward and praise him. This second part requires being the master, do not let the dog be anywhere in the house away from you. He should always be in the same room with you. Now keep an eye on him, if he starts to try and sneak away for any reason, you call him back. He's not just your pet, he's your minion. He shouldn't be out of the room from the master while he's in training. Now I'm sure you've already scolded him when he messes up, but dogs don't care about that except for when its happening. When they feel the need to pee, they're going to pee, because what the heck, you're not scolding them now and you might not this time. Do not be at his beck and call as to when he wants to go outside! He's the dog, you're the master, unless its an unusual case, you want them going only on the fixed schedule. You opening the door when he wants to go, only says Me Dog Me Master of my Domain, you not master, you dog's slave. If you cannot keep an eye on him while he's in the room with you, or at least half and eye, or he wants to wander around the home, then put him in the kennel. This teaches the dog he can be with you, or he's got no life. Life comes through the master and only through the master. Without the master, the dog has no life.

Also to establish who is the master, do not leave food sitting out. Keep feeding sessions, preferably one per day, on a regular schedule. Get the food, set it on a counter near the feeding area. Make the dog sit and wait while you place the bowl on the floor. Then continue to make the dog wait. If he refuses, just hold him away from the food until he settles down and gives his attention to you. Then say OK and allow him to go eat his food. If the dog just wants to nibble, take his food away and put it away. There's always the next scheduled feeding time, even if its another day away.

What you're doing with all this is controlling the dog. He's learning all food, pee and poo breaks, and even his play time is scheduled and controlled by the master. Some might think its mean, but dogs actually like the interaction. They get all excited for all these different events in the day and they know when they're going to happen. When you've got them really on schedule, and this can be a pain when you feel lazy, suddenly they're right there in your face saying its feeding time, or its outside time. I even make my dogs sit and wait to get their treats. Its really pretty cute as I'm holding two treats in my hands and both dogs are staring at me waiting for me to say go, then they both get up on their hind legs and take the treat. Sunday my brother brought by his dog for me to look after while he's out of town. This dog is spoiled and rules the roost back home, and occasionally pees or poops in the house for them. He is already waiting for treats, and going outside only on a schedule. We're also working on eating on a schedule, and waiting for his food bowl. But by the time they're back next week, I should have him doing that just fine to. It will be up to them to keep to his training, we'll see how they do, as they both kind of spoil him.
