My wife lives in India and I've filed the I-130. According to http://travel.state.gov/content/visas/english/immigrate/immigrant-process/documents/submit/documents-to-submit-to-nvc.html , the Required Documents are

Original documents, photocopies, and translations (if required, as explained above) of the following documents must be submitted to the NVC for you and each family member immigrating with you to the United States.

1) Photocopy of Valid Passport Biographic Data Page
2) Photographs
3) Birth Certificates (You (and any family members immigrating with you to the United States) must obtain an original birth certificate issued by the official custodian of birth records in your country of birth, showing your date of birth, place of birth, and parentage. Important Notice: All Immigrant Visa applicants must submit a long form original birth certificate. Short form birth certificates will not be accepted)
4) Marriage Certificates (If you are married, you must obtain an original marriage certificate, or a certified copy, bearing the appropriate seal or stamp of the issuing authority)

5) Police Certificates (Each visa applicant aged 16 years or older must submit police certificates)

6) Petitioner Documents
A) Do they want the original Birth certificate & police certificate?
B) What is the certified copy of the marriage certificate? ( is it a notarized copy?)
Thanks in advance

ya, sorry,

the instructions in the I-130 clearly state 'photocopies only' of those docs.

NVC instructions are different. Glad you caught it !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Photocopies of the documents is needed for I-130 stage.

For the NVC stage - your civil documents submission will need originals and notarized copies as applicable

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

My wife filed I-130 petition for me. I had my interview on 20th and got approved.

Documents which I submitted to NVC were originals of Birth Cerificate, Marriage Certificate and original PCC. You can also submit the certified copies(notarized copies, at notary they put a stamp stating "Valid for foreign Embassy"), but if you submit notarized copies, you have to take originals with you at the interview.

I submitted the originals to them and they gave them back to me at the interview. Good luck to you.

To Rupyal85:

Thanks a lot for the post. I just wanted to clarify this.

1) Did you submit the originals of the marriage certificate, pcc and birth certificate to NVC Chicago and they returned them to you when you attended the interview at the US Embassy in India? I hope the originals don't get lost.

2) Did you submit the DS-260 via online and when did you send out the required documents to NVC in USA?

2) The instruction says the marriage certificate can be either original or a certified copy. Is it okay with them if we show them the originals at the in person interview?

Thanks again!

Thanks again!

For the NVC stage you need both Original (or certified copy) and a photo copy.

1. Photo copy of the photo page in the passport

2. Original or certified copies of the birth certificate, Marriage license, and the police certificate.

3. Photo Copies of the Birth Certificate and Marriage license.

A certified copy just means that you obtained the document from the original source (Like the vital statistics office) and they stamp it on the back and sign it.

Darnell is not wrong. It is clearly stated that for the I-130/I-129F you send in photo copies. If you were requested originals then that is new to me. My I-130 was approved just fine in December without any originals.

I am now at the NVC stage sending in my supporting documents for the DS-260 which these are requested to be originals.
