  1. 1. Can Rand Paul shatter the traditional right-left divide and construct a brand new coalition of voters on this issue?

    • Yes. With the era of "the internet of things" at our doorstep, it is time for a national conversation on privacy. The old political models no longer apply.
    • No. Right and left will continue to have meaning in a country that still cares about issues like abortion and affirmative action and taxes. Privacy can take a number.

BERKELEY, Calif. — Delivering a rare speech for a Republican at this bastion of liberalism, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul on Wednesday was given multiple standing ovations by the left-wing audience after railing against government surveillance and warning the students: “Your right to privacy is under assault.”

“I am here to tell you that if you own a cell phone, you’re under surveillance,” he told the crowd.

Paul’s address at the Berkeley Forum on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley focused on the National Security Agency’s collection of telephone metadata and the debate over privacy.

...

That Paul decided to take his libertarian-leaning message to one of the most liberal campuses in the country is no mistake. He is actively making an effort to appear before crowds that have not been supportive of Republicans to demonstrate his ability to appeal to a broader electorate.

I believe Rand Paul is this countries last hope in terms of how the government functions. After the actions of Bush, and then Obama continuing the course so to speak, people will look back at the next election as a major turning point in the history of the US government, perhaps similar to Rome circa 27 AD. (IE the weakening of congress, and the power of balance slipping further to the Executive Branch).

I see Hillary continuing the path of Bush.

Libertarians, and Rand Paul specifically, are wishy-washy when it comes to Federal Civil Rights so that means no African American votes or really any group that is protected by such laws.

But as I have said before, I do give Rand Paul a thumbs up for at least reaching out to other demographics unlike other GOP candidates.
