I went to a Social Security office this morning to update my name to my married name, and update my immigration status as I have just received my Green Card (K1 adjustment).

The lady started to process it, and then told me that USCIS still have me under my maiden name, and haven't updated their records to my married name (which my EAD card and Green Card are in). She said that they can't change my name/status until it matches USCIS records. She told me that she would put in a request with USCIS to confirm the name, and that this could take 6 weeks (or longer, in which case she would call me).

I got my EAD card almost a month ago, is it usual for USCIS to have not updated my name in their records yet? Has anyone had this happen

Would it hurry things along if I contact them, or should I just wait and hope its quicker than 6 weeks? I don't really wanna have to wait that long.

That doesn't make sense, you should have been able to change your name once you got your EAD. Sounds like you got a clueless social security clerk, I'd try again maybe at a different office. The one off of 290 near the beltway seems to always be quick if you go mid morning.

Are you wanting to change your name on your SSN so you can file 2013 taxes MFJ? If not then there is no real rush.

That's what I thought. I don't see how USCIS could have issued either document in my married name if all their records are still in my maiden name. But then I don't know much about how USCIS works.

It was the one off 290 that I went to, and the woman I saw seemed pretty knowledgeable. I think she may have even been some kind of manager - she was the first window and had others coming along to run things by her. I -think- she knew what she was talking about.

I'm not really in any rush to have the name changed, I've just got a long list of things to update my name on and it was one of my top priorities is all. I'll just wait it out and give them a call in a few weeks if I haven't received anything.
