I'm wondering if anyone can give me a bit of a hand here...

Yesterday, one of my co-workers came into the lunch room asking if anyone wanted a bunny. Said the poor thing had been running down the HIGHWAY, cars were dodging it and he'd stopped to see if he could grab it. It wasn't a wild rabbit, it was a white and black domesticated one. The rabbit surprisingly ran right over to him, allowed him to pick it up and stayed quietly in his lap on the 40 minute drive to work. Obviously someone's pet that's gotten loose I would think. Mark then didn't know what to do with the rabbit...lol..so he set it loose in the Inn's greenhouse. (Mark's the horticulturist for the place)

Anyway, I had to go see this bunny. I love bunnies had a huge old white one named Floppy when I was a kid...one of the best pets I ever had.

I saw this sweet little bunny and I knew I had to have him hahaha just had to convince the hubby that we needed it hehe. And so I did.

We brought him home this afternoon and have him in a big box temporarily until we can get him a cage and supplies tomorrow and he's doing just fine. Only thing is...I'm not sure that he's a regular old rabbit, ya know? I'm thinking he might be one of those dwarf rabbits or a very young rabbit. I am leaning more towards a dwarf rabbit tho. Here's a pic of my daughter holding Peter (Cottontail :P and yes he is a Peter) And another of just him alone...

What do you think he is? He's very small, weighs no more than 2 lbs. I'd say. Whatever he is...he's adorable. :content:

I know nothing about rabbits except that they're so cute! I have a soft spot in my heart for furry little rodents. I'm glad your co-worker could save him. Last night, I tried to save a baby piegeon who had fallen from its nest. The mother was flying around screaming and trying to distract me, and the baby ran under a car and disappeared. It was cold, wet and weak and I wanted to take it home to feed and warm it. I'm sorry I couldn't find it once it ran away. Your storyy about the bunny makes me feel a little better about losing the baby piegeon.

Your daughter's a cutie too!

i'm leaning towards older rather than younger, as the young rabbits we had when i was a kid was scared of people. an older one would be more used to people than a younger one i'd think.

for some reason looking at that pic i'm thinking of a mini lop.

Looks a lot like a Checkered Giant. (I had one as a child.)

This is a very good breed of rabbit -- he will make an excellent pet. It's one of the larger breeds -- males can get pretty big -- up to 10 pounds or more. (But I understand that the males make even better pets than the females.)

Mine was very friendly. The Easter Bunny left him for me one morning (he even had written me a note !!!! but the rabbit ate half of it before I woke up :P.) I had him for about 6 or 7 years. All the neighborhood kids used to come over and play with him. During the day he liked to hop around the yard, and at night we put him in a hutch that my dad built for him -- made from plywood and chicken wire. We put some hay in there for bedding, or sometimes shredded newspaper. I fed him commercial rabbit chow, and he also enjoyed fresh vegetables like lettuce, cabbage, carrots, etc.

Oh and he absolutely ADORED pancakes !!!! (without the syrup.) I forget how I discovered this odd quirk. But he would just go crazy if I came near him with a dry pancake. Rclouse's pic of the rabbit with the pancake on his head always reminds me of him.

Anyway, I think your bunny has found just the right family ! Enjoy (L)

What a lucky bunny! (must be the 4 lucky rabbit's feet that he has ;) ) - and he sure looks happy in the 2nd picture. I don't know enough about bunnies to know if he is a young one or an adult of one of the smaller or dwarf sizes. He looks relatively mature in the photos. Probably a trip to the vet is in order. Anyway, kudos to your co worker for rescuing him off of the highway, and to you for giving him a safe home.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Amie4six -- I think you may be right. Sharon's bunny has very short ears, just like the ones in your pics.

It's adorable !

Thank you all for your replies! I think that Amie has hit the nail right on the head tho that this little rabbit is a Netherland dwarf. he does have the shorter ears and his paws are teeny little things. While I wouldn't have minded it if he ended up being a Checkered Giant breed, The thought of him growing to 10+ lbs. gave me visions of my poor hubby having to make this huuuuge hutch for him hehehe. And us being eaten out of house and home too! :P

We got all the wood for the hutch today but hubby hasn't quite finished it, it'll be done tomorrow. So Peter is in the box again for the night. We barricaded off the hallway and shut all the bedroom doors so that he could get out and hop around and get some exercise for a few hours at least without getting into trouble or chewing up anything he wasn't supposed to. He is sooo freakin' sweet too - sad to think that someone has lost a pet like him. It's doubtful that anyone will put out 'lost" posters or an ad in the paper for a lost bunny...but you never know. He absolutely loves affection and leans against your hand when you pet him and is sooo curious about everything, it's amusing to watch him explore. :)

Thanks again for all your help and suggestions, everyone. I'll take pics of him in his newly built hutch tomorrow and share them.

Aww! So cute! He looks like an adult dwarf to me! I had one for about 10 years (he died when I was 17) and although he was brown colored, he had the same sort of face and small ears, etc. Good luck with him! :D

We have a lop and I believe they're the ones with the longer ears that fall to the sides.

I've been thinking about/collecting pictures of lop-eared bunnies for about a month now. I'm officially jealous that you have one! lol

Well we got him when I was in high school so he's at my parents house for now. His name is Oliver and he's almost 8 years old. He's got attitude. The dogs love to eat his poop and he loves to hop around with them. I'll have to show you some pictures tomorrow!
