I thought your mom is still in Germany. Since she is here. The process can take a little less, dependent on your local office and how fast they process adjustment of status.

We talked about it, no way can we afford health insurance for my wife's mom. Now if we were billionaires, wouldn't be a problem. But just hard working people barely above the poverty level because of super high taxes. Hurting even more this year due to Obamacare more than doubling our high deductible.

Got me to wonder why I was forced to fight against socialism in countries I never even heard about when we got it right here?

On line 7 of the 1040, our gross wages also includes the amount of FICA and our share of health insurance we pay that is taken out of our paycheck, so we like you have to pay income taxes on money that we don't even get! On schedule A, can only deduct the amount of our medical expenses that exceeds 10% of our adjusted gross income. In our case, that number exceeds the amount of high deductible, so in effect, can't deduct nothing.

We also cannot deduct our transportation expenses to and from work or school, and with the price of vehicles today and the super high cost of gasoline, this becomes a huge expense. But without this expense, our income would be zero. Not so if we were billionaires and could afford a 47 million buck Gulfstream we are using to entertain our clients, plus all the maintenance cost at 100%.

Our current tax system is designed to screw the hell out of hard working people. If we weren't screwed this bad, could easily afford the money for my wife's mom health insurance. Provided our jobs are not moved to China.

NickD,

I'm curious about what appears to be your misguided rage at the "system." I was wondering: exactly which countries' socialist systems were YOU "forced" to fight against? While it's true that the current tax code is rife with loopholes for that portion of the top 1% of wealth owners in this country whose income is sourced from non-traditional streams, I fail to see how it "screws the hell" out of hard-working people who constitute the vast majority of the workforce. There are so many provisions for legitimate deductions for the ordinary worker in the United States, that once you can get past the annoying paperwork, the code is actually quite liberal compared to the rest of the OECD world.

Seems like you just sought out an opportunity to rage against the Affordable Care Act and appear to have done so in oft-repeated talking points that you don't even understand very well.

That said, I sympathize with your rising healthcare costs. That's got to be a pain, especially since the roll-out of the Affordable Care Act has been less than stellar leaving a lot of middle-class families and individuals in the financial lurch.

Panem today, Panem tomorrow, Panem forever...

Last time I knew lpr's were exempt from Obama care. Only citizens were required to get this! Boy I can go on about my feelings about the ACA .. High monthly payments outrageous deductibles that must be met prior to insurance coverage taking effect. Ooh boy.. I wont even go there..

Now to the petitioning of parents..

My wife's parents thankfully will not be wanting their green card. They are too deeply rooted in their country and cant abandon everything there. They do have a 5 year tourist visa and wouldn't really need a green card. The whole idea of a green card is to live in America permanently so right now the tourist visa is fine. Besides I enjoy gong to Ecuador to visit her family for a few days then visiting my friends up in the mountains.

My mom or my entirely family never have intention to move or live in the US. She's happy living where she was born and I would never push her to come with me when the end of the day she would struggle to adjusting herself into a new environment including how to deal with the language barrier.
