Can an LPR Adopt USC Children?

I am not sure if this is the correct forum, but admins feel free to move this topic if needed.

I am an LPR who is currently eligible for US citizenship. I have been married to my husband for almost 4 years (been together for 6 years). He has 2 children from a previous very short marriage. He has had sole custody of the children since they were infants. The biological mother abandoned them and never tried to contact them until she learned my husband and I got married (they were 5 & 6 at the time). The courts awarded her visitation rights in 2011 and she still was in and out of their life. She subjected them to dangerous situations and put them through a lot.

She has been out of contact with them for quite a few months now, and recently contacted my husband and said she would like to sign her rights over to me and said she knows it is best for them. I already consider the children my own. They have called me 'Mom' since my husband and I were engaged by their choice. There is no doubt in my heart, that I'd want to legally adopt them.

My question is can I adopt USC children as an LPR?

8/1/12: ROC window opens
9/4/12: ROC packet sent
9/8/12: ROC packet delivered to VSC
9/12/12: Check cashed
9/14/12: NOA letter received (NOA dated 9/10/12)
9/20/12: Biometrics letter received (Bio appointment 10/15/12)
10/12/12: Early biometrics walk-in

4/27/13: RFE received

6/17/13: RFE response sent

7/1/13: ROC petition approved

7/5/13: GC received in the mail.

I'm sorry but what is LPR? Not good at Acronyms. Sounds like your in a great position and why couldn't you adopt I see no reason why you can't. Just get those papers signed as soon as possible don't wait. Much luck and happiness.

LPR = Legal Permanent Resident. Basically someone holding a 10 year green card.

If you meet the state requirements you can file the petition. Many times even for a step parent it is not a quick process with requirements for the length of marriage and background checks.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.
