Married!!!:):) now what

Finally I married the man of my dreams! We are very happy and excited about our new life together. We send our marriage license today and now will wait for certified copy which should take 3 weeks or so. What can I be doing now? I guess I don't know what our new paperwork process is. How and when can u get my SSN?

Can't tell from your timeline but I think you're a K1? Read the Adjustment of Status Guide (AOS) and forms and start reading the AOS forum on VJ and asking questions.

Enjoy being together while filing at this stage - no more sad phone calls and pitiful loneliness for you!

Polish up the resume but don;t worry you have plenty of time before you can work. Enjoy your time at home...play Suzy Homemaker or workout or play video games until you drop (I know I did). Stay up late because you can and you don't have to work in the morning!

I applied for my SSN around the same timeframe as my AOS (less than a month after the wedding) - the AOS guide may tell you when. I applied in my married name and used my marriage cert to support that name change.

Thank you! So we are waiting for our certified copies of marriage certificate. Takes about 4 weeks! (ouch) should I wait to get that before I go get my SSN ? What do I need to get this. Can you tell me what the I-94 is? Will I receive something in the mail from PoE? I drive thru Maine boarder with my car. She mentioned I would get something in the mail? Did you get anything back from the PoE? Anything from te sealed package?

You get your i-94 online, just google i-94 electronic copy.

I just went to the SSN office today & applied for my SSN. I got it in my maiden name because I heard so many people getting turned down with their married name because the visa is in maiden name, I will just get it changed when I have my EAD. We are also hoping to send out AOS by the end of the week, just waiting for Affidavit stuff! If I were you I would go to the guides and start the AOS paperwork now so you can send it asap. (How to get a SSN is in the guides too )

My husband's father is the co-sponsor so we are just waiting for his i-864 in the mail, and more recent pay stubs & letter from employer etc We fill out a different affidavit of support for the AOS than we did for K1.

I took my i-94 & my passport, and the application filled out. That's all they asked for but I had my birth certificate and IDs from home just incase.

Google is your friend - go to the Social Secuirty site http://www.ssa.gov/

You'll find the form, its instructions and all the details you need to apply for your SSN. I personally don;t see the point of applying in your maiden name, you'll just have to go back and change it with SS later. I had no problems using my marriage certificate as proof of name change.

I just had heard that if you didn't already go and get one before you were married it is hard to get your first one in your married name because the name on the immigration documents is your maiden name. But if you could do it in your married name then that is great! Maybe I shouldof tried, I just had read that everyone had difficulties & I guess I like to avoid difficulties haha. I guess I have no problems in using my maiden name for things at the moment even though I am married, I am finding it hard to adjust to the name change!

I-94W is a waiver, I-94 is what you will get with the K-1 and should be stapled in your passport when you entered. We went to the SS office right before we got married, just under 2 weeks after POE, and got the card within a few weeks. We waited to file the name change until after she had her green card beause it had a statement under the SSN saying it was not valid for employment without proper documentation, that way we got rid of that as well. Unfortunately it took several months to get the name change done, as their computer systems had no record of her green card, despite the fact that she was standing there holding it.

(the i-94 is now electronic and you get it online, just so you know nothing is stapled to your passport anymore, haha just to avoid confusion)
