I am sorry, maybe because of the language barrier this is still not clear to me.

Can he sponsor alone without the wife? (Because of her residing elsewhere) or can she also file I-864?

Just if he has enough income for a household of 4, which is $29,812. Does he make that much on his own? If he has enough income on his own to meet the requirement for the household of 4, then yes, he can do it all on his own. He just needs to show his individual income along with his joint tax transcript, and letter from employer and/or recent pay stubs that shows his individual current annual income.

If he does not have enough on his own, then he could fill out an I-864 to sponsor only one of the 2 intending immigrants, and the mother could fill out another separate I-864 as a second joint sponsor to sponsor just the other intending immigrant, if she has enough income to meet the requirement to do so.

OR, find another joint sponsor that meets the requirement for their own household size plus the intending immigrants.

If his current income is different from what is shown on his taxes, then provide evidence of his current income: an employment letter and a few months of pay stubs will work.

The link goes to where I posted how to count household size directly from the I-864 instructions earlier in this same thread. I will copy and paste here once more then. You can also read the I-864 instructions on your own > http://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/files/form/i-864instr.pdf

How to count household size >

Your household size includes yourself and the following individuals, no matter where they live: any spouse, any dependent children under the age of 21, any other dependents listed on your most recent Federal income tax return, all persons being sponsored in this affidavit of support, and any immigrants previously sponsored with a Form I-864 or Form I-864 EZ

Yes his kid is counted as well.

This means all dependent children: no matter where they live, no matter if they are claimed on taxes are not, MUST be counted in the household size.

The instructions state a front and back copy of the green card, so it is possible to get an RFE for the joint sponsor's proof of being a permanent resident if you send only a copy of the front.

Proof of permanent resident status includes a photocopy of both sides of the "green card," Form I-551, Alien Registration Receipt Card/Permanent Resident Card
