My wife wishes to move from her home city of Lucknow to Mumbai, both because she wants more independence and because I have heard/read on here that the Mumbai consulate is easier to get a visa from than the Delhi embassy. We put in our I-130 in November and the way things are going I expect that we will be done with that by April/May, and sending our first NVC documents in July. We have a couple of questions though:

1. Is there a length of stay requirement in order to be processed by a certain embassy/consulate?

2. What is the absolute latest she can move before the interview? And what proof will the consulate request of her for proof of address?

3. Will she have to get multiple police certs? If so how soon after moving to Mumbai can she get a police cert?

4. Will there be any possible negative effects of doing this?

Sorry for multiple posting, but this seems to belong in more than 1 forum. Thank you!

Since she's not moving to a new country, I can't imagine there being any requirement in terms of length of stay to be eligible to use that consolate. She may need to provide a lease or some kind of proof of residency, should they want her to go to the Delhi embassy/consolate.

Do you know how she has to apply for the police cert? For example, the UK has the form available online and on that sheet my husband just has to list every address. I think your wife will probably only have to do one because she'll still be in India.

I know I didn't really answer your questions, but those are my estimates of the process. Given USCIS weird processing time frame, you're probably looking at May approval (hopefully by that time, NVC will have their backlog cleared up)!

FWIW, we are an interracial couple who recently interviewed through the Delhi consulate and had no trouble at all. I personally prefer Delhi because they allowed me to attend the interview with my husband.

I don't think length of time matters at all. A friend of mine was able to pick Delhi as their consulate even though her husband lives in Mumbai. Also, NVC assigned my husband to Mumbai but I had them change it to Delhi since Delhi is way closer to my husband's home address in Haldwani than Mumbai. It was an easy change.

If your wife has a Mumbai address, she will face no trouble at all having NVC assign your case to Mumbai. Make sure when you get your NVC case number that it starts with BMB.

I am the petitioner.

wifey was a resident of india for 25 years until she became a citizen of brunei.

she is currently in india working for a oil firm on OCI and we're doing our interview in mumbai.

here's my 2 cents.

i) Move to Mumbai - Delhi sucks - they put you in AP and are rude to the point of insanity.

There is NO advantage to be processed in delhi WHATSOEVER

There is NO advantage to you going to Delhi either - perfectly legit couples have been denied there.

ii) She can move whenever as long as she reports the move to uscis /nvc.

Let them know before you pay your fees at the nvc - thats all.

iii) There is only one police certificate and its only issued by the passport office.

Before it was the Lucknow PSK. Now it'll be the Mumbai PSK.

There is no local police verification or local police certificate involved.

iv) I repeat. Move to Mumbai - the consulate doesnt care for proof of address.

Do not listen to those on here who are advocating for delhi.

delhi is hell - i mean no disrespect to those who have stated positive reviews - but avoid delhi if you can.

Looks like we are close to being approved and my wife still has yet to move to Mumbai. Am I correct in saying she needs to move before we get a case # at the NVC?
