Hey all,

So my husband and I sent in our I-130 about a month ago (PD Feb. 18th). I know that you need to have a passport valid for 6 months beyond your interview date for this process, and my Canadian passport expired mid April of 2015.. meaning that if our interview is later than mid October, we'll run into problems. Anyway, I'm gonna play it safe and renew my passport before that as I figure it'll just be a lot easier.

My question is: when would be the best time in the process to do this? Should I wait for the NVC stage, or do it now, or post NVC, etc. etc.? Also, would I need to notify USCIS/NVC (depending on when I do it) that I've renewed my passport (I'm the beneficiary, by the way)?

I'd appreciate your input!

EDIT: Dammit, I totally thought I was in the Procedures forum when I posted this. Sorry mods! Could you move the thread?

Depending on how long it will take to issue a new passport, I would do it right after NOA2 and before sending in the IV package as including a copy of biometrics page is a requirement.

No need to notify USCIS, as including a copy of the biometrics page with the I130 was not needed smile.png

That's a good idea! It should take 10 business days, so if I do it right after we get the NOA2, it should be done long before we even receive a case number.

I can't seem to find it, but am still not sure: do they ask for your passport number on the I-130?

There seem to be a lot of DMV (I just learned that doesn't just stand for Department of Motor Vehicles in that area.. after a lot of confusion :D) filers on this forum. It's interesting.

Isn't that commute like an hour and a half long?? Which part of Canada is your husband from?

By the way, I'm following your timeline as another Canadian DC VSC filer :) Cheers!

Ha! I just learned that, too -- about DMV!

Yes, the commute is 60 miles each way, about 1 1/2 hours with traffic. Thankfully, I do get to work from home two days a week, so that helps.

My husband grew up in Kincardine, Ontario, but he's currently in Kingston finishing out his last month in the Canadian Forces. Whereabouts are you?

No, no plans to move -- I love the Old Town area. Would love to find a job closer, though!

Congrats on finishing up your last month in university -- that's a great accomplishment!

Oh, and I figured out the timeline follow -- very easy, I'd just never noticed that button before.

Some news by June would be great -- my birthday is the 26th, so that would be a great present :)

And back to your original post -- my husband needs to renew his passport, as well (his expires in November 2014). Did you say it only takes 10 business days? He might just go ahead and do it now if that's the case. In the US, we have to mail our passport in and it takes a month or so, if I remember correctly.

Hmm yea that would be nice. What do you do, if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks! I can't wait to be done with this. It's nice to have something to keep me busy, but it's just been so stressful lately. I look forward to being able to wait in peace haha.

You'll probably get some sort of news by then. They seem very close to their 5 month goal, so June would be your time. My birthday's March 26th, so maybe USCIS will give me an NOA2 as a birthday present? Hahah that'd be nice.. :/

It depends on if there's a passport office near him. He can look on: http://www.passport.gc.ca/service/index.aspx?lang=eng. If there is, he can take the application in himself, apply, and the passport should be ready for pick up in 10 business days. I think if there aren't any nearby offices, he'll have to DHL it in or something and that takes 20 business days, with an option for expedite (you'd have to pay extra) if you're planning on leaving the country (you'd need a copy of your ticket). It's pretty simple :)

I just looked, and there seems to be an office in Kingston on Clarence street. I don't know how close that is to him, but that's promising!

I am the beneficiary.
