Hi guys,

I came over here on a K1 visa and got my GC 3 weeks ago.so i went to our local SSA office hoping and praying i can have my SSN but to my dismay i was told the immigration is not confirming my last name but instead its my maiden last name who's coming on their system.and so they had to take photos and copied all my documents then i was a letter that goes ' BEFORE WE CAN ISSUE YOU A SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER WE MUST VERIFY US TO SHOW YOUR ALIEN STATUS WITH THE FEDERAL STATE OR THE LOCAL OFFICE ISSUED THE DOCUMENT(S).THIS MAY TAKE UP TO 4 WEEKS.' I got so frustrated because i was thinking having the green card in A-list document????so frustrating as i can't apply on everything!!! Anyone has the same case as mine?

You could try applying in your maiden name. If you meant you cannot apply for your green card without the SSN, then I want to ease your mind and let you know that you can. The SSN is not needed to file for AOS. If you get the SSN In your maiden name, then just go back when you get your EAD or green card in your married name and change your name on the SSN. If you wait it out to get it in your married name, then go ahead and apply for AOS without it.

What name is on your GC. You will need to get your SSC in that name first. Then go back with the marriage certificate to get the name changed. You could also e-mail the main SSA office listed on their website and explain your situation by telling them the place, date, time, and if you can remember whom you talked to and what they told you. You can get a SSC with the GC and you can change your last name with the Marriage Certificate, but unfortunately most SSA employees are poorly trained and do not know their ####### from a hole in the ground. You might want to go here to see what the SSA required in order to change your name.
