They charges vary from insurance company. Your dentist or hospital my charge Insuarnce company A 75 a filling, while they charge company B 125 a filling!! I have yet to visit the dentist in the USA yet, and trying to avoid it

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Sounds like a scam, but each insurance company is exactly that a company, and I do not know many companies that like to loose $$$. And like all businesses, they charge different fees!! I'm not stating ur dentist did not make a mistake with the fees, maybe further reseacrh is due? If I was in a situation that required a lot of work, I would ask for an estimate, then phone around!! Best of luck.

so is it the insurance company that says what each procedure is going to cost?

too late for that hubby already has had a lot of the work done.... when he went the first time, they told him that the person in charge of billing wasn't in that day or something.. so he didn't find out how much it all cost until his next appointment...

I'm sorry I still don't quite understand

the dentist decides what each procedure is going to cost ...

and the insurance company decides how much they are going to cover for each procedure, depending on your plan etc....

did I get that right?....

Like said by other people, I'd recommend shopping around. I had one dentist in my home town, that charged $60 a piece to do cavities. I went to a new one when I moved to college, he charged $300 each!

Original Bill - total cost for procedure $647.00 - Insurance covers $323.00

New corrected Bill - total cost for procedure $800.00 - Insurance covers $388.00

the dentist told him they thought he had the better dental insurance....

i do understand why what the insurance covers is different.. I am just wondering why the dentist charges are different

Check with the insurance company. If this is a PPN type deal and the dentist is part of the network, then what they are allowed to charge is agreed with the insurance company. The dentist cannot charge you more to offset the discount the insurance negotiated with him. If the dentist is out-of-network then you're out-of-luck and will have to pay up.

the dentist is in-network...

Yes, they have rates that they negotiate with the insurance copmpanies. I'd still check with the insurance company to make sure that you're not being overcharged by the dentist.

the second set of quotes I have there are from the Insurance site, so I think they are correct....

it just seems to me that there should be a flat rate for the procedures .... :P
