Hey,

I received my ASC appointment notice a few days ago to have my biometrics taken at the St. Paul location.

As good as it is to have my case move along, frustratingly my biometrics date is exactly the same as the day I have a driving test booked. For some reason driving tests operate on a 4-7 week wait in Minnesota, so I really do not want to have to reschedule this test as I want to be able to drive ASAP.

I have read in many sources online that the ASC centres operate on a first come first served kind of basis, and you are given a ticket number and sit and wait to be called, much like at a post office or DMV.

Is this true for the St Paul location? My driving test is 2 hours before my biometrics appointment, so I'm hoping it should be entirely possible to complete the test and arrive at the ASC on time. However, even if I was 30-60 minutes late, should I expect a problem with that? Assuming they do operate on a first come, first served basis, surely I would be okay turning up after the time written on the letter?

Has anyone had any experience with the St. Paul ASC office, or is there anyone who can confidently give me an answer on this anyway?

Thanks!

you should be OK with 'same day' at the ASC, even you show up 20 minutes before they close.

Heck, you'd even be ok coming in the next business day, sweet talk the guard that you had other government appointment yesterday and could not make it.

It's not that they're loosey-goosey about this - quite the contrary - but the ASC folk (and the security guard) do understand being late , and even being off a day, for legitimate OTHER government business.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Another option would be to just do a "walk-in" sometime before your appointment just to get it over with. I'm not sure how easy it is to do in your area but ASCs often allow walk-ins before your appointment date. Some people go as soon as they have their appointment letters on hand. It's all you're going to need to get in there and get it done so save yourself the stress and just do a walk-in. =)

Sein oder Nichtsein, das ist heir die Frage.

We were just at the St. Paul office, they do not do walk ins (I saw 3 people told to come back on the date of their letter).

My husband took his driving test a few months ago we just showed up (3 times, because he failed the first 2 tests, stupid snow he couldn't see the lines in the road). Anyway it was no problem longest we had to wait was 30 minutes. I would suggest you show up for the driving test when it is easy for you and cancel your appointment after you pass the test.

Good luck

Which driving centre? I have read online that it varies, and the ones around the Twin Cities are always very busy.

Thanks to all the other replies - I'm pretty confident I can get both things done in one day - it will be a bloody productive day!

So just to confirm, the biometrics process is: walk in, wait, get called up, fingerprints and photo and then you're done?

He took it once in Plymouth and twice in Arden Hills, like I said no problem at either place for us to just show up and not a horrible wait any of the times. I don't know what your schedule is like ( we didn't do this, all 3 of his tests were in the afternoon) one of the people who works at the DMV said the best time to come without an appt is when they open. Honestly I don't think you will have a problem, and I wouldn't want to wait that long if I were you.

For to biometrics his appt was at 1 PM we arrived at 12:45 and were out of there in 10 minutes. I think that they must give a group of people the same time because 4 or 5 people rolled in after us with 1 PM appts. It took them a bit longer because they had to wait for those in front of them. All in all it was quick and the people were very nice.

We did have one problem that you may have. For the actual drivers license he got a letter saying that they couldn't give it to him because he was only here temporarily (they go off the date of your I can't remember what it's called but the form when you come that expires in 90 days I94?). We had to go downtown St Paul to the DMV and provide a "certified" copy (we tried with just a regular copy and they sent us home) of the marriage certificate, and a copy of his visa. Hopefully you will not have the same problem, but thought I would mention it just in case.

Do you mean the ASC office on university avenue ? If so than here is my experience , we got appointment for 8:00 right when it opened and about 10 other people were waiting in line cuz they too have a appontment same time and one by one we waited for the guy at the desk to check our apointment paper and we all were told to sit down and fill out a form and when ur ready get back in line and they will call you up to go take your pic and fingerprint. Overall everything took around 15 min its very simple and no they dont give you a ticket number its more like when your finish filling out ur forms than just get back in line and they will direct you to go and have your pic taken and it wasnt even a long wait only 8 min or so depending if they are busy... One thing more to consider about the driving's test appointment i know that they usually give you like a 4 week later apointment wait or longer but in case you fail here is a advice ,you should schedule a appointment online even though its 4 weeks away but check everyday if there is appointment available for sooner because sometimes people might cancel there appointment and you might get lucky to get a appointment early in case someone cancel their driving test apointment.. My husband failed his driving test on his first try and we checked everyday and was lucky enuff to get a good appointment that someone canceled one week later but sadly he fail again .. but Good luck....
