I have question about my sister in law'sincome. She said they worked as contractors (her and her husband) and they made 9,800. Their boss did not issue a 1099. But they have a record of what they have earned. So Technically, my sister in law earned $ 4,900 and her husband $ 4,900 also. How can they file a tax with this? Married Filed Jointly or Married Filed separately? Which do you think they will owe smaller? and What tax form?

Thank you.

God is good all the time..

There are too many unknown variables to give a good answer. If your she really doesn't know anything about taxes, then she should probably go to a tax preparer. Since there income is quite low, there should be on organization willing to do it for free if they look.

She should be aware that as a contractor, they are responsible for paying the taxes themselves and their employer didn't make any withholdings. I don't have the forms handy, but they're probably not going to owe much income tax, but they will likely owe 15% self employment tax.

They really need a tax preparer of some sort.
