Hey all,

So mu husband went to file his taxes today, and I just received my SSN in the mail. It says on it "valid for work only with DHS authorization" printed across the top. We went to file "married jointly" for taxes and it says my information and SSN isn't showing up in the IRS system??? Do you think this has to do with me being on a visa, OR is it some sort of mistake?

Thanks everyone.

Katie

It could take a while for the different federal systems to "talk to each other" apparently.

If you just received your SSN, the magical system of data (of which I have zero understanding) may not be updated yet as to your existence as a SSN holder.

Dont think it has to do with you being on a visa. More to do with it being a brand new issued number.

Give it a little time. You have a couple weeks before tax deadline.

You have to paper file your first time.

Ok, my husband was using turbo tax? So he cannot do it this time because I'm new to the system?

Should this be a written statement signed by both my husband and I?

How to Make the Choice

Attach a statement, signed by both spouses, to your joint return for the first tax year for which the choice applies. It should contain the following information:

  1. A declaration that one spouse was a nonresident alien and the other spouse a U.S. citizen or resident alien on the last day of your tax year, and that you choose to be treated as U.S. residents for the entire tax year
  2. The name, address, and identification number of each spouse. (If one spouse died, include the name and address of the person making the choice for the deceased spouse.)
