● Walmart alters a 15-year-plus policy allowing managers to lock overnight employees inside some stores. The new rule requires managers with keys to be present in order to let workers out in case of emergency.

so what?

That's the truth. The corporate greed extends to those who make our labor laws, that's where the problem lies. You can't lay all of the blame Walmart for playing by the rules they were given.

I'd also be curious to know how many of those who are criticizing Walmart own their own businesses? If you made a profit of say $500K, would you think it was too much and give it away? What if you had 3 other partners and they didn't agree? I'll bet dollars to donuts that the majority would be on the other side of the fence if it was their money that was being discussed.

I applaud those who stick to their guns. Don't shop at Walmart, don't work there. Get involved with the labor issues. Fight online retail. Buy American. Sell your Hondas and Toyotas. Elect officials who are pro labor and anti gun. Sell any stock you have in a greedy corporation and give the money to the poor so you don't have any blood on your hands. Get rid of those 401K's, there's dirty money in their somewhere. Don't just talk it, walk it.

so what?

My guess is they would go out the fire exits if there was an emergency.

I don't know of any business that does not do everything possible to maximize their profits and that includes paying their employees as little as possible without causing a major disruption within the company. Most employers figure out where that line is for salaries that are just enough to keep most of the workforce happy and and other employees coming in to replace the one's that aren't, and they stick to it.

Fixed. But still correct since WalMart isn't the only corporation that purchases rules and laws that are in their favor.

That's exactly what it is. If the labor pool dries up, wages increase. Most companies pay according to what is required to maintain that balance.

Bravo!

And for a publicy traded company, it is management's fiduciary responsibility to do so ... to maximize return of shareholders' investment.

Wages are based on the value to the company, not the needs of the employee.

Thanks.

I still think corporate greed sucks though. And workers who are the heart and soul of every successful business should be compensated in a way that reflects that.

I said the economics of higher wages translating to more spending would strengthen our economy is simple. Successfully getting laborers to organize in today's political climate, along with the political clout of these corporations, makes it difficult.

simple solution to Walmart's greed....STOP SHOPPING THERE! If they run out of customers, they cannot earn a nickel. I have not set foot in one these 'stores' since 1994, and refuse to even now. Of course, Walmart pours money into the pockets of local politicians so new zoning rules will come about, all favoring opening another gigantic store that ruins surrounding small businesses and preys upon Chinese children and prisoners who make the cheap ####### this company sells. They place the burden of health care of their employees upon local taxpayers...a clever marketing scam, allowed when those same local politicians get their pockets stuffed with Walmart 'incentives.'

Just stay out of these places....

How is this a marketing scam? Does Walmart promote 'taxpayer funded healthcare' as a benefit?

It's not a clever marketing scam but it is what you can expect from a business that has no regard for human ethics. The real problem with the idea that market forces are the be all and end all is that the end result is what we see now, business dedicated to making money but not doing so in a way that produces an overall benefit for either the community it is located in or anyone doing business with it, either the end user or the producer. If money is sacred and benefit to humanity a secondary, long way down the food chain consideration the company will not focus much attention on the ethical side of being in business. An ethical business will consider all aspects of the way it does business, from the way it treats its employees to seeking to purchase goods from companies that equally pay living wages and source materials in responsible and renewable ways. That costs money but results in a much more human friendly business model. I think some people can see the overall benefit of doing so while others clearly can't for whatever reason.
