Hello VJ,

Does anyone know if you can get hired with your expired GC and the one year extension letter?

I'm currently in CA, and applied for a job with the county, however I'm wondering if there's a job offer, would the GC+letter be acceptable as proof of work authorization? I'm currently employed but this other job would be a great opportunity that I don't want to miss :/

Any ideas, advice, experiences?

Of course it is. Your employer may not like or try to not recognize it, but with no doubt it is a proof of work authorization.

legally yes,nobody can deny you work on the basis of extension letter.

But i wonder if sometimes its difficult to even explain this letter to dmv for the renew the ID ,then how many employers would know about this letter.

I must say you should first try for job then if they hire you then only leave your present job,just to avoid the risk.

If you just show them your social security card (if it has the "valid only with..." annotation removed) plus your drivers license you don't even need to show them the green card. This would avoid any issues with them not understanding the extension letter.

I think they ask for legal status in US,ss# and ID is not enough.

Legal status is "lawful permanent resident". SS and drivers license is all you need to show them.

Read the I-9 form. You need 1 document from List A (green card) OR a document from List B (drivers license) plus a document from List C (social security card without the annotation). The employer cannot specify which documents the employee shows.

I had my orientation for my new job 2 days after my GC expired. All they needed was my SSN and license.

An employer cannot ask you for a specific document (ie your green card) when verifying your eligibility to work, that's against the law.

All you need to show is your SS card and driver's license like Lainie B said.

If they use E-Verify then that will tell them you are legal to work.
