At the present there are plenty of other countries in which Walmart can outsource it's labor. Until there is nowhere else for Walmart to turn, unions will only hurt those who seek their guidance. That's not happening anytime soon. There are far too many 3rd world countries looking to upgrade. That's why I say in a global marketplace the US will need to take a few steps back before it can move forward again.

Sure, but that's on the manufacturing and supply side of it. They can't outsource the gal working the register or the guy who stocks the shelves.

Everyone is part of the chain. They may not be able to outsource the gal stocking the shelves, but if that gal becomes union, prices go up, sales go down, people lose jobs. And let's be honest, there are no real job skills involved in stocking shelves, a company like Walmart can fire anyone who threatens to join a union and have their jobs filled within a week.

In general I don't have an issue with a company becoming large, competing, and replacing competition that can't compete.'

Walmart has done a few things that I think that do cause harm..For example forcing companies to move operations overseas like they did to Schwinn and Levis.. Or forcing them to contracts made when they were small for products at ridicules prices like they did Vlasic pickles which eventually forced them into bankruptcy.

My personal experience with them - The company I worked for at the time had a lot of stores in California. There was an "agreement" between Albertsons, Kroger, Safeway, and a few others to *not* compete with wages and there was little problem with the Unions - Cashiers and other employees were paid a living wage. Walmart came in and they did compete on wage and it was hurting these other companies.. These other companies (including mine) first tried to force walmart to join the unions and pay workers the same rate as the other stores. When that failed these stores lowered wages and the unions went on strike.. 70,000 employees from Ralphs, Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, etc all went on strike simultaneously - they sat in front of stores and told incoming customers to shop elsewhere. According to the stats almost 75% of customers shopped somewhere else - guess where they weren't striking.

So while I have nothing against the format/idea behind a company like walmart, I don't think there is any doubt that they contributed to the lowering of wages for low-skill for lower-middle-class jobs.. Many salaries that were at say the 15-20 dollar range a few years ago are now in the 9-12 dollar range..

So I'm ignorant because I've never heard it used in a racist manner? Or maybe I'm, ignorant because I use the dictionary definition and don't think of blacks when I say it? Hmmmmm..............

To answer your question, yes.

Ignorance does not necessarily mean mal intent. For example my own ignorance almost got me killed. When I first bought my house I used to warm my car up in the attached garage without opening the door. Growing up I never had an attached garage. I only did it for maybe 5 or 10 minutes. Sometime after that I saw a story on the news in my neighborhood where a taxi driver killed himself and his entire family on accident warming his car. The fire chief was warning people that it only takes a matter of 2-3 minutes to succumb to carbon monoxide poisoning. I was shocked.

Point is people may call me an idiot for not knowing but I was truly ignorant of the fact that I had no idea what I was doing could be deadly. Now if I learn from that experience I am no longer ignorant and if I keep doing it then I guess that is some entirely different.

Now you know the context of that word and how it has been used. So why are you still complaining? You learned something and now you are a better person :)

Just bc you don't know something, ie you are ignorant of a truth, does not mean that that truth is somehow invalid.

What's so difficult to understand or comprehend?

And no ignorance as a definition means lack of knowledge it doesn't mean something bad in an attacking kind of way.

What's amazing is how someone can post 4 sentences and not say anything at all.

That is why they have to kill all the old people, the scholars, the teachers, the politicians - anyone that can remember how things were in the "before time."

I for one am sick and tired of the same old corportist anti worker message, and the army of morons who happily repeat it, over and over again.

rolleyes.gif You have done well, comrade.

What's the saying, ignorance is bliss?

 Happy?

Unfortunately that tends to be the American way. Make as much as possible while paying out as little as possible. Ethics rarely come into play when it comes to business decisions. As long as the laws are being followed, then usually no one balks.

It is almost a given. My wife is getting her HR certificate, so I get to help her with her homework. Who knew a "Statement of Ethics" is par for a large corporation, or any organization, for that matter? I learned that just couple weeks ago. I was disappointed, to say the least, to learn that corporations are not the ruthless blood sucking leeches Hollywood always told me they were.

My not knowing about uppity being a derogatory term for blacks may be ignorance, but leaving a car running in a closed garage is beyond ignorance. It's beyond a lack of common sense. It's just plain dumb. devil.gifdevil.gif
