I did miss that. Did moderation come to the decision that uppity was racist or was it one of the members of the peanut gallery?

There is a racist connotation in the use of that word in relation to black Americans. I was surprised that more people weren't aware of it.

If I'm going to be in the Peanut Gallery, I demand to be Charlie Brown. Top billing and all. Anything else would be racist.devil.gif

I never heard of uppity being used as a racist term. I relate it to being snobby, pretentious, conceited, pompous, etc.

I have and I'm not American. As I understand it it's used to poke fun at someone who acts above their station.

It's not a commonly used term.

I knew that it was used that way too, but never heard it was meant toward blacks.

It's like calling a black man 'boy'. Not inherently racist, but does have a racist connotation depending on who is saying it and why.

I posted the definition within the thread it was used. It means snobbish in any other meaning. But for black people, it's not used in the same vein. It's used to say since we lack anything above a sub-basic intelligence, to speak properly without slang would warrant being called uppity.

I had never heard it either. Nor has anybody I've asked since. I've always used and heard it used in the way you used it.

I don't like Walmart and I try not to give them my money - though I have had to go there from time to time like it's late at night and I need something and no other stores are open.

When Walmart comes to town they suppress local economies by eliminating a key market principle of capitalism, competition. Small businesses, lets say TV shops, can't compete because Walmart has a direct link to the source of cheap TVs manufactured in China. American TV manufacturers are non existent thanks to the influx of cheap knockoffs from China. I remember we used to have Zenith when I was growing up. Zenith was brought up by S.Korean LG. You want to buy a TV at an affordable price you pretty much have no choice but to go to Walmart.

A lot of you just want to sling your political rhetoric around, but I don't see how it's good for the consumer in the end to get rid of competition.

Walmart is just not good for America. They pay poverty wages and the rest of the American people subsidize those workers who collect welfare because the company won't pay livable wages. That's not capitalism my friends.

It is Capitalism.

There are plenty of choices for affordable TVs. I purchased mine through Amazon at a much better price/quality than Walmart or any other retailer in my area had to offer.

Walmart pays the prevailing wage. People choose to work there.

What the hell is a 'livable' wage? What's livable for one may not be livable for another ... or do you want to dictate what others can and should earn? Your idea of Capitalism?

Some folks don't understand the very specific, very real impacts of these companies activities as they pertains to particular industries.

Some people would rather be condescending tosspieces.

Just because you don't know something, it doesn't mean that it should be dismissed out of hand with silly pictures and meaningless labels.

It's amazing to me how ignorance and stupidity so often go hand in hand.

What's amazing is how someone can post 4 sentences and not say anything at all.

I am old, I learned it from ole George.

I think G brought this up. The Jeffersons and All in the family wouldn't get air time now on TV due to our standards. But, I'll admit, I do miss the old shows.

A livable wage is one that does not require someone to apply for food stamps because they are not being paid enough. A livable wage is determined by several factors such as cost of living, inflation and other tenants of capitalism.

In some communities where Walmart has driven out all other competition people don't have a choice but to work there.

I miss those shows too. I think they were a positive in helping to break down race barriers. They allowed people to joke and laugh about things rather than take them so seriously all the time. Too much pc in all directions these days.
