This depressing animated map shows Walmart taking over America

And Microsoft has been kicked off it's throne by Apple. If Walmart is breaking the law, I'm all for taking appropriate action. But otherwise, it's just free enterprise in a capitalistic system, isn't it? And of course we can support workers rights and vote with our wallets. But if one doesn't want to work for the wage Walmart offers, one doesn't have to work there. If you weren't happy with your paycheck, you'd ask for a raise and if the answer was no, you'd either accept it or look for another job.

Nobody was tricked when they got hired by Walmart. They agreed to work for the wage offered. How is this unfair? Just like the athletes signing a contract for 4 years and $60 million and then complaining a year later they aren't being paid enough. In both cases the employee had the choice to accept or refuse.

Vote with your wallet. Shop at Target, Costco, BJ's etc. Fight to stop Walmart expansion in your town. Support worker rights, but support the employees freedom to move elsewhere.

Some companies break the law, some companies operate within the law but in an unethical manner (the Nestle baby milk scandal, for example). As you say, people should (and do) vote with their wallets.

Of course there is a question of ensuring a fair market place - that's why you have competition commissions that block company mergers that will give someone de facto control of an entire market.

Nobody's perfect.

Of course, it would be better if people took issue with companies over things like pay and conditions for employees, unethical or anti-competitive business practices etc.

As it is, it seems that more people would rather boycott Coca Cola over a TV advert. Go figure.

Your socialism sounds nice and squishy, but it's easy to hear you singing doo dah day.

Let's make this easy - you find the post in this thread where I explicitly advocate socialism. If you can't, you can apologise ;-)

An x with influence rofl.gif

I figured a nonsense comment deserved a comparable reply.

& I'm glad I made you laugh...better than the bitterness you typically exude.

The goal of socialism is to even the playing field so that it provides those with less skill and opportunity a better shot. Every country that has tried any form of it has failed, and it always starts by attacking successful business because they are deemed unfair, breaking the law, harming others, what have you. Wal-Mart is successful because they provide products the public wants at a cheaper price. Fact is, people like Wal-Mart, but there is a group who is having minimal success at demonizing the name. Wal-Mart provides jobs to thousands the world over.

If Wal-Mart is so evil, what do you suggest happen? Close the company? Jail the stockholders and executive staff?

Public executions. Maybe with a guillotine.

A 1997 report on studies conducted more than 20 years ago.....wow.. very relevant.

There was one statement that caught my eye =

· It is possible to co-exist and even thrive in this type of environment.

& if you consider the business models succeeding today...that statement is correct.

Capitalism just ain't fair! It's not fun watching other people have all the fun and money. Grab a stack with both hands and make a stash.
