Not to mention, wherever there is a Walmart, there is a Home Depot, several restaurants, an auto parts, now they are adding an urgent care, and various other stores. So, saying Walmart is the only employer is an evil lie, and it always will be an evil lie.

Home Depot, Lowes, restaurants, auto parts stores and car dealerships are all evil too. Any places that provide jobs are bad.

A living wage is a wage which allows people to earn enough income to afford basic food and shelter and a means to basic transportation. I honestly don't what is so complicated about this. Some people really need to turn off the television and quit being told what to think by their corporate masters. I for one am sick and tired of the same old corportist anti worker message, and the army of morons who happily repeat it, over and over again.

Agreed, people should watch much less television - and set about doing something constructive, like trying to improve their lives, spending more time with their loved ones or contributing to the community.

So a living wage is basically a minimum cost of living … the complicated issue with this is that it is variable within each locality and is variable among individuals too. Your basic requirements may be very different than mine … #######, if I went by my son's basic requirements, I'd be living on cocoa puffs and yoo-hoo, riding a skate board to work every day and sleeping wherever I happened to end up at night. So who defines what I need to live?

I don't believe all corporations are anti-worker … they cannot be if they hope to attract a workforce which meets the needs of the company. Companies that employ less skilled employees (WalMart, for example?) have a larger pool to draw from and can pay lower wages and offer fewer benefits. People with more developed skills and/or more experience usually attract better wages and more favorable benefits when their skills/experience are needed. It's supply and demand - at a basic level, the skills/capabilities that a potential employee can provide are a commodity.

This is America. You don't have to shop at Walmart or work there, your choice. Walmart is a business, last time I checked the majority of businesses exist to make a profit and satisfy shareholders. Theoretically, any business operating in the black could charge less for their products/services and pay their employees more money. If Walmart had trouble attracting workers, they'd have to pay better. Obviously this is not the case. When people quit working there and quit shopping there, things will change. Most entry level retail jobs don't pay well. Check out Macy's, Kohls, Target, etc. If it was so easy to get a better paying job, nobody would work at Walmart. And there are things that are sold there that are cheaper than they are anywhere else. Don't like it, don't shop there.

I think you're missing the point. Walmart, like Microsoft in its hayday, sits alone at the top. They are by far the largest retailer in the world. No other chain comes close. And like Microsoft, they bullied their suppliers by black-balling them, knowing that because of their dominance, they could make or break their suppliers. So their suppliers looked to cut costs by moving production overseas to places like China.

So I suppose you could have the same nonchalant attitude about those businesses that were black-balled by Walmart - they simply could have found other retail chains, except they know the reality of the situation - that without Walmart, they'd go out of business.

True competition is awesome when it truly exists, but market driven corporations who only answer to their shareholders, behave in ways that are not beneficial to its labor force or even to its consumers. It's about market dominance.

So how do we change it? Yes, we vote with our wallets, but also, we can support workers' rights to organize. Walmart has fought long and hard to keep their employees from organizing, but it is time they start paying their employees a livable wage.

Another angle to it - the taxpayers are essentially subsidizing the low wages paid by Walmart because most of their labor force relies on some form of welfare. Walmart executives are well aware of this and have in fact, encouraged their employees to seek out government assistance.

I did, it's not a smart place to shop if you want value. That does not equate to calling poor people idiots. The people who shop are Walmart are the sort of people who clip coupons. They think they are saving money but that's just another marketing ploy. You may spend less if you are using a coupon on something that you want anyway, but most people buy products with coupons simply because they are cheap not because it is something they need or normally buy (that's not smart no matter what way you slice it) and the only way to save money is to put it in a savings plan.

That's exactly how Walmart works. You don't see people doing their weekly shop down there, you see trollies full of disparate items that noone could have left their house with express intention to buy.

Go to buy milk, come back with plastic garden furniture that happens to be on offer. It's all about encouraging impulse purchases.

You really should shop in a Wal-mart before you make such claims......

If you think that's a 'weird fantasy' you clearly have no imagination.

PS so if I criticise Walmart shoppers I'm criticising the shopping habits of wider America. On your bike!

And Microsoft has been kicked off it's throne by Apple. If Walmart is breaking the law, I'm all for taking appropriate action. But otherwise, it's just free enterprise in a capitalistic system, isn't it? And of course we can support workers rights and vote with our wallets. But if one doesn't want to work for the wage Walmart offers, one doesn't have to work there. If you weren't happy with your paycheck, you'd ask for a raise and if the answer was no, you'd either accept it or look for another job.

Nobody was tricked when they got hired by Walmart. They agreed to work for the wage offered. How is this unfair? Just like the athletes signing a contract for 4 years and $60 million and then complaining a year later they aren't being paid enough. In both cases the employee had the choice to accept or refuse.

Vote with your wallet. Shop at Target, Costco, BJ's etc. Fight to stop Walmart expansion in your town. Support worker rights, but support the employees freedom to move elsewhere.

Interesting to scan threads like this where the libs continually post pamphlets from their socialist agenda and then consider it confirmation that their brand of socialism is best. It always has the same theme that everyone deserves a shot by squeezing success by the nuts.

i'm going to assume you have shopped at wal mart. my question is why? if you're against the companies practices, why would you support its prosperity?

At some point everyone does a deal with the devil.
