Here’s an unsettling look at the Walmart-ification of the U.S., starting in Arkansas in 1962 and ending with total domination more than 3,000 stores across the country. First the chain spreads throughout the state, then the Southeast. Then Walmart crawls north and west, looking for all the world like an invasive species:

It works for whom?

That's a very good question. Let's think about it:

1. It works for the consumer because they can buy a good product at a reasonable price

2. It works for the employees, because they have a steady job

3. It works for America, as it adds revenue to to pay off our debt and pay for road and bridges to nowhere, and businessmen who didn't build it, the government did.

4. It works for the stockholders to continue with their successful model and build this in other cities of America and around the world.

But, this is bad. Success? Who want's that? Must be evil, bad and disgusting.

I never worked for a poor man in my life

It's a race for the bottom, shifting manufacturing jobs overseas and running competitors like mom and pop shops out of business. Depressed wages. The list goes on.

Mom and pop shops pay low wages and have poor working conditions. A large firm like Walmart receives extra scrutiny. The wife just finished a seminar on labor regulations. Walmart was the go to litigant - why? Because they are big and everybody want to get them. So which employees get the better treatment in the end? Surely not that person working retail in some small establishment afraid to lose his job.

For people that want to see the map, and not have to read all the left wing propaganda that goes with it.

I'm not sure I believe the wage aspect. At the end of the day, a community of mom and pops versus a few big box retailers will have more employment, and more money staying in the community.

I see what happens to towns when Walmart, Home Depot, Costco, etc. show up. The community becomes developed, people start working and customers come from other areas too snooty to have such big box stores in their neighborhoods. I am talking people willing to drive 80 miles or more, to find a Walmart.

Prove it.

Walmart is more efficient than 2-3 mom and pops that would cover walmart's goods. Greater efficiency means less jobs. Less jobs means less money in the community.

Mom and pop keep and use the money in the community they live in. A decent percentage of walmart's money goes back to the corporate headquarters in Bentonville.

Finally, Walmart has the political clout to force local governments to lower their property taxes. Mom and pop don't have that clout.
