Do Muslims eat chickens in USA?

Do you live somewhere where there is a big Muslim community? That will usually make a difference. Nation wide, I don't believe Costco sells halal, but they pay attention to local needs. Every Costco I have been to sells kosher chicken frozen. And our kosher laws are very similar to halal as far as the butchery is concerned.

i have not met yet any muslims in the area where i live , i will look for the halal chicken at costco next time i go there,

yes you right

I buy halal when I can, they sell it in the supermarkets here and we have several middle eastern markets where it's available. But when I don't have halal or if it isn't available he eats regular meat, well with the exception of pork.

witch supermarkets ,you mean costco ?

I work with Muslim and Orthodox Jew families from time to time and obtained some info. I see you are in LA. Don't know which part though. A family from Syria I know shop here: Super Hayat market on 16904 Prairie ave Torrance CA 90504. (310) 370-5707. Kosher markets such Glatt market are located in Encino and West Hollywood (between Santa Monica Blvd and Fairfax ave). But easiest way to find out: use Yelp, search for "halal meat" in your area. http://www.yelp.com/search?find_desc=glatt&find_loc=Los+Angeles%2C+CA&ns=1&ls=43719fa9c621f1d4#find_desc=halal+meat

Thank you for the information, and for the link, your help is appreciated

I became familiar with this center and its members while working with a very fine Muslim family. Maybe you'll find some suitable company there.

No, costco isn't a supermarket, it's a discount warehouse. I buy it at the regular supermarket, they have a whole section of halal.

I personally do not eat Chicken/Lamp/Beef here in US (non Halal). I have been almost eight years, and what I do is ago every month, and buy what I need from a farm owned by Muslim whom they slaughter in front of you, and they sell it to you, Also; Costco, Sams Club and Whole food start carrying Halal food. In a restaurant, I will say becareful it's not considered Zabiha, I will not say it's haram; we are allowed to eat the food from people of the book which are Christian's and Jews. The problem is how would you know if the animal is slaughter accordingly and being slaughter by Christian or a Jew?
Another thing, if you are invited to someone's house, it's rude to ask if their food is Halal just say Bismiallah and eat.

Why you don't call the nearest mosque to your home or in your state to ask your questions about food also see what is their answer .

I believe we need to be absolutely sure if the meat is hallal or not, If it is not then it is forbidden, unless someone is dyng of hunger and he/she is forced to eat that meat for his survival or something.

Unless you can get concrete evidence of where the Halal store gets it meat, it would be hard to know if it really is halal. The only thing you could do if you want it fresh and halal for sure is go to a farm, buy the live animals yourself and butcher them yourself. We have done that occasionally. We do have a halal store here in Grand Rapids, but it does seem like the meat isn't always as fresh.

There have been times when my husband has eaten meat that isn't halal and says Bismillah. He won't do this on a regular basis however, but I suppose that is subjective. Meat from McDonald's and other places isn't halal and probably isn't even very good for anyone considering the process their meat goes through (cleaning with ammonia or something like that).

That is our experience, take it or leave it. smile.png

I dont think it is ok to say bismillah and eat a non-halal meat, it really doesnt make any difference as far as my knowledge goes, it still remains non-halal. Its best to buy in bulk halal meat for a month or so, or become Vegetarian \ Eggetarian for some time when we dont find halal meat as simple as that idea9dv.gifsmile.png

Hi,

Since i came to USA , 1 month ago, i ate meat and chicken as needed , no pork for sure , forgetting how they slaughter them, as quick as my friend in my home country he reminded me about the way how the HALAL meat should be slaughter, i stopped eating the meat and the chicken (20 days ago), i eat just fish and vegetables waiting to find a Halal place, i did found one islamic store in the city where i live, the -halal- chicken was not fresh (not like in the big supermarket) mixed with non halal chicken in the same queue , no body was there buying any halal meat or any chicken ,i asked the Meat seller where they slaugh the meat and the chicken , he told me they have butchery somewhere, i would like from where you Muslims you buy Halal meat and chicken? is this islamic stores with halal meat and chicken are Trusted ?

what about chicken ?

it is permissible to eat meat from the People of the Book (Ahl-e-Kitaab), i.e. the Jews and Christians

do you eat chicken at McDonalds and other such places in the USA?

Thanks

Are you really settled and living in Los Angeles? If yes, please get to your favorite mosque, talk with the Imam /Muallah about where to shop, as he knows all.

Buying Halal is geographical for 'the right answer' - is best to talk with the Imam.

On a side note - some of the huge supermarkets have halal-foods but you have to do your own research.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

I don't think you should advice that going to someone's house and saying Bismillah makes it ok.

Halal is the type of animal Muslims are allowed to eat. Zabiha is the type of method that is the Islamic way of slaughtering an animal. Kosher is the way Jewish slaughter their meat it does not make it Zabiha.

Costco and Target super centers are in most USA cities. I did some checking and only wished we had those stores near to us because we spend alot on the halal meats at our local store.

offtopic45vn.gif Costco and Target are not related. Off-Topic2.gif

You shouldn't have a difficult time finding Halal meat if you are in the Los Angeles vicinity, or even in the valley. There are large Muslim communities all over southern california (I grew up in San Diego and went to college in LA). I have every faith that you'll be able to find a place that you like and trust!!

As I was researching further on Zubinah.com...about Costco Halal meats...

the lamb is supplied by Austrailain Lamb Co a halal certified supplier, prepackaged in the Kirkland vacuum sealed packs with halal stamp.

BUT some cuts are are repackaged and this is when it is no longer guaranteed.

Using the same machines and knives as with the pork for repackaging is where it goes wrong.

AQIS only guarantees it high quality and certified halal as long as it is sold in this original package with the stamp.

Here where we live we are still searching also for Halal meats. Thanks for starting this post SARA82, it has been helpful for us gathering info. It looks like we will have to drive down south to find our markets if we are going to find any fresh Halal meats.yes.gif
