So, the current opposition in the UK is planning to tie long-term benefits to offers of work, should they return to power at the next General Election. Refuse work, lose your benefits.

What's interesting is that this is coming from the left wing of British politics, which is unabashedly socialist, not the right. Seems like they're just getting tired of the freeloaders. It will be interesting to see if this gets anywhere.

And if the Brits can do it, why not here?

Because here there will be 2 years of political commercials running up to the election, with graphics of the unemployed living under bridges and in their cars. Whether it's the truth or not.

It seems that the British are not even sure they can do it at all. The article says that the 'compulsory work' initiative would be on their platform and -IF- Labor wins it may be put in place in 2015.

Having said that, the correct question should be: If the British eventually do it and if it works out, should America consider a similiar initiative?

The answer is 'not bloody likely', but I am sure the British will try and sell it to the Germans or the French...

At this point the best anyone can do it wait and see, or find your local OTB and play the odds.

Why not? Are you in favour of the unemployed staying that way voluntarily?

For America, I believe the way out of unemployment is creating more jobs. Compelling people to take any work the government dictates not only will go down with the left but it will also be shot down by the right. We can all hope the plan works in Great Britain, for their economy is no picnic these days either, and the Torys are falling way short on their promises.
