Hi All !

I'm new to VJ & is finding so much information very useful . My fiance is living in Nigeria. And after months of being bf/gf we decided to tie the knot. I know one of the requirements is to meet face to face. We already knew that I would have to vist him in Nigeria. (Getting a tourist visa is damn near impossible for USA lol) I have 2 main concerns. 1) Being that Nigeria is a HIGH fraud country what are the chances we will get approved? 2) Would i be able to get a pardon because of extreme hardships..due to the mass killings in Nigeria?

Thanks in Advance!

Unless your fiance lives on a street where the killings are happening all the time there is no chance of an expedite . Most people that have less than 30 days together have issues getting a visa the first time they interview.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

You could also meet in a 3rd country that he is able to travel to if you don't want to go to Nigeria, although I gather from other Nigerian cases that the interviewing officer likes to see that visits have been made to Nigeria/the family etc. (the relevant sub-forum should have more details).

You must meet face to face... This is even more vital for Nigeria... 1 short visit and not meeting family/friends is a giant red flag. Lagos is one of the most difficult consulates... I would look up recent experiences for there... Do you have other red flags (age difference, outside childbearing age, religious etc...) as these would compound the short courtship,and quick visit issues... Read up and be prepared...

I plan on going to Nigeria for 2 months. Then again once and for his graduation, then once more for his interview if he is granted one. Im 21 & he is 24. Both of us never married. Nor have children yet. Im more concerned that the BH will do us or him harm before we can continue the process.

Good, so far it sounds like a good plan to spend time together... Nothing overcomes issues like face time!

To try to answer your questions:

1) The Lagos Consulate is unpredictable. Some people seem to fly through and others with mounds of evidence and face time in person have problems. So, best guess is 50/50 for anyone in my opinion. Not based on any scientific formula. Note that you MUST spend good quality time together (preferably in Nigeria). At this point, you haven't even met in person and do not qualify to file for your fiance until you have done so.

2) There is no such thing as a pardon. Even if an expedite was approved, you just get to skip the line, you still have the interview in Laogs and burden of proof that the relationship in bonafide and not for immigration purposes only. If you are looking for an expedite to move things along faster, I don't think this situation would qualify and I can't recall anyone on the forum getting an expedite approved for this reason. You would have to prove that the hardship is on you, the USC, not the beneficiary.

Regarding your upcoming visit, note that you do not have to meet in Yola, and I probably wouldn't suggest it for a first-timer to Nigeria. There are many "safe" places to spend time together in Nigeria. The COs know this and will not take the "it isn't safe for me to go to Nigeria" excuse as valid. Remember that the COs live and work in Nigeria--they are well aware of the situation.

Good luck on your journey!

@NigerWife

Thanks so much! We have been speaking about possibly staying in Lagos or maybe Abuja. I have a few more months before my trip so we'll see the direction of the BH. I'm not really worried anout the interview itself. We have well over 5000 texts, skype calls & gift transactions. And spent hours & hours on the phone. Being that it is Nigeria, the very thought that they may not take us serious bothers me.

Whatever your final decision, DO NOT go to Yola, or any part of the Northern Nigeria, for that matter! And this advise is coming from a Nigerian woman who should know.

Lagos is your best bet & trust me, it's a safe place to be. Best of luck!
