My wife just got a unterview letter for her i485 for march the 31 and they require her to have the orginal passport as proof of documentation. Well we filed taxes last month and the social security office gave us problems so she couldnt get a social security number until they verifiy all her info which can take a month or more. So we had to file for a itin number for her and the only way they can verify her is that we had to send her orignal passport. And they say it can take up to 60 days to get her passport back. So its like we are stuck. I dont want to push the interview back but will they accept her other documents like empoyment card birth certificate etc? any help would be appreciated thank you.

You shouldn't have sent the passport, you could have had it verified in person - http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/ITIN-Policy-Change-Summary-for-2013.

I think the EAD should be valid for ID if you don't get the passport back in time.

Currently there are no service centers in my state that do on site verification. The most i could do is go there and give them the docs then they send it. And i spoke with some tax preps in the area that has deal with this and they all said the same thing. But thanks though we have all the other documents.

When we had to file our 2013 taxes we had to send an ITIN request. We sent in a certified copy of his passport that we got from the issuing agency. And even with this certified copy, we got the certified document back and the ITIN issued in under a month. So you still might get the passport back before the interview.

Maybe you could get a 'certified copy from the issuing agency' of her passport docs, just in case?

the tax preps told me it was almost impossible to get a certified copy because they have recently changed the rules. I don't know the whole story behind them changing the rules it but i tried everything i could have before sending it off.

Hopefully we will get it back.

there is a irs document outlining the new rules ill try to find it
