Hello fellow journeymen,

My fianceé has now finally received her K-1 visa from Colombia and we are thrilled. We have tickets purchased for her to come through Miami in May. I will be with her as well.

Is there anything she should know when going through customs? What kind of questions may they ask her? Should there be any problems whatsoever?

I'm sure some of you have probably gone through this already so any help or advice would help.

Thanks!

Mitchell

You should not have any issues with Miami as POE, the customs and immigration is top notch and knows the drill, my wife with son in tow entered through Miami with no problems (see our timeline below), just be sure to have all the documents (visa, medical, etc.) together and ready for the officer, they may ask the typical "What city are you staying in?, Have you ever been in the US before?, Where are you from? Tell me about your family back in Colombia?, Whats the reason for your travel (of course marriage the reply)".

My wife commented how professional and comfortable the officer was, he spoke perfect spanish, he was polite and even had some fun talking to my then 3 year old in Spanish about his favorite scocar team.

Now the hell we went through on our day trip to Tijuana Mexico a few months back is another story - Coming back through the San Diego border walk through, what a complete bunch of morrons the California Border Patrol is, I can't help but wonder if this is how they treat a tall white green-eyed professional gringo born and raised and living in Los Angeles taking a day trip with his Latin wife and son WITH ALL CURRENT DOCUMENTS, god help any Mexican or Latin person that passes through."

Good luck!

First off, congrats on the K1...

as far as POE goes - mine went smoothly, this is how it went. we got to the customs booth and they asked for the envelope and my information, I explained I am coming over with my K1 Visa, I went in for further processing where they went over my things, and asked if I am importing my car (since I drove to the USA from Canada), and then they took the envelope, stamped my visa with my I 94 number and the expiry within 90 days. Within those 90 days you must marry, they will tell you that as well..Other than that, from my personal experience it was very easy and fast. BUT each officer is different, some are power happy. Hope yours goes well :)
