Also the stolen passport passengers were ticketed through PEK on to the EU so they wouldn't have needed Chinese visas.

Ya, this is smelling a bit...

nah - actually there are some good folk on the FBI teams, with actual skills in researching stuff after the fact. You remember, forensics and what nots...

And lets get real for only a moment - any hint of Muslim Terrorism, we (the USA) gets involved. It's not often that a high-profile event is show-cased in the international news, fwiw.

Surely, the first thing you do is establish what happened to cause the loss of the aircraft?

That's what the AAIB does. And they are the experts in this field, not the FBI.

The reports of wreckage being found by Vietnam will probably not be able to be confirmed until daylight tomorrow. I expect there will be jurisdictional issues that arise between Malaysia, Vietnam, China, and the USA as to who should be heading up the investigation, and who will be allowed passage. There are huge territorial disputes especially with China.

Vietnam Prepares Investigation

State-run Vietnamese newspaper Tienphong (www.tienphong.vn) reported:

Lai Xuan Thanh, Head of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (under the Ministry of Transport), just sent a document to Lieutenant General Vo Van Tuan, Deputy chief of staff of Vietnam People’s Army and the People Committee of Kien Giang province, which administrates Tho Chu Island.

According to the document, the MoT will set up a working group led by Deputy Minister Pham Quy Tieu to head to Phu Quoc island, which is the biggest island in the Gulf of Thailand. The group is expected to leave for Phu Quoc at 06:00am Monday to prepare for the establishment of a frontier headquarter for the search and rescue mission of the Malaysia Air plane. The team will also work on preparations for investigation of the case.

The USA has no jurisdiction here whatsoever. The AAIB may be invited in because they are the best at what they do, but the investigation should be led by the Malay authorities, as the home country and departure point of the flight.

I agree that Malaysia should be allowed to lead the investigation, but as you see from the Vietnamese state controlled media reports, that Vietnam has already assumed that they will lead. I will be very surprised if this investigation doesn't lead to several disputes between all nations involved. This was a Boeing 777 aircraft, which is designed by the US, and the US has the best services for analyzing. Using history as a predictor of the future, these Asian nations have a huge thing about keeping and presenting "face", are are heavy-laden with corruption. For the sake of the families involved I hope this will not turn into a botched operation due to poor handling, unwillingness to cooperate, and worse.

And then China has suffered the most loss, and wants answers.

The theory that the 100-ton Boeing 777 aircraft carrying 239 people burst into pieces 35,000 feet above the Earth could point to a sudden explosion.

“The fact that we are unable to find any debris so far appears to indicate that the aircraft is likely to have disintegrated at around 35,000 feet,” a source involved in the probe told Reuters on Sunday.

Well. That's terrifying.

This has all the markings of a similar incident over the Atlantic, a few years back, when a french passenger aircraft literally fell off the sky on its way from Rio to Paris. And of course, from those on either end of the flight, it is nervous wrecking waiting game. I can't begin to understand what they must be feeling.

Still no word. Looks like the plane basically disintegrated in mid air since the debris was ruled out.

Not really. That plane transmitted several minutes of data indicating that there were problems. They knew it went down intact, but they just couldn't find it.

The Malaysia Airlines jet didn't transmit anything out of the ordinary before it abruptly disappeared from radar. They combined that with the lack of debris and it leaves high altitude breakup/explosion as the most likely scenario.
