A new analysis of satellite data in the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 indicates that the plane went down in the southern Indian Ocean, Malaysia Prime Minister Najib Razak said Monday.

Razak said during a news conference that he was briefed by the U.K. Air Accidents Investigation Branch about data calculations conducted by British satellite company Inmarsat.

“Based on their new analysis … MH370 flew along the southern corridor, and that its last position was in the middle of the Indian Ocean west of Perth,” Razak said. “This is a remote location, far from any possible landing sites. It is therefore with deep sadness and regret that I must inform you that, according to this new data, that flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean.”

Shortly before Razak’s announcement, relatives of the passengers were booked on charter flights to take them to Australia, sources told Sky News. An emergency meeting between families and Malaysia Airlines officials took place in Beijing, Razak said.

Malaysia Airlines Says It Is Focusing on Providing Care to Families of Missing Passengers

A senior Malaysia Airlines official said the company is focusing its attention on providing extra care to the families of the 239 people on board Flight 370.

The official denied that the communication was just an SMS message. “We met the families face to face at the hotel to inform them,” he said.

“We still can’t draw any conclusions about what happened. But we do understand the relatives and friends need closure. We hope we can recover the plane’s recorders that may hold clues,” said the official, declining to be named as the investigation continues.

The government of China has issued a statement in regard to the recent announcement from the Malay Prime Minister. It's not in print yet, but I can paraphrase that they are not happy with the Malays and are demanding explanation and accountability.

BEIJING (REUTERS) - China's foreign ministry said on Tuesday that it was demanding Malaysia provide all information and evidence about a missing Malaysian jet after the country's prime minister said it crashed in the southern Indian Ocean.

"China has already been informed by Malaysia of this announcement, and we are paying great attention," the ministry said in a statement.

"China has already demanded that Malaysia further provides all information and evidence about how it reached this conclusion," it said, adding that China hoped search efforts continued.
