My wife just came down, says they're trying to find the black box, but pretty sure about the crash. What a tragedy.

I hope this is not related to the recent attack in Kunming, China. News reports from this region of the world usually develop slowly, and often have conflicting information. The way this plane just dropped off the radar without warning is very suspicious.

Worries me too. Has to be a catastrophic failure like an explosion or something. I think any automated warning system activity on the aircraft is automatically relayed and it seems like there wasn't even time for that. Although it's possible they just haven't released that information yet.

An emergency squawk isn't something you can hide and the search teams seem like they are actually searching, so I don't think they have any signal to look for. It certainly looks like a sudden, catastrophic event. :(

The B777 is the most widely used wide body airliner in service today, by a fair margin. It has a generally good safety record. This loss is going to worry a lot of airlines.

The Mirror is reporting two passengers were using stolen passports (article).

Australian newspaper reporting that according to a flight tracker, the plane plunged 200 meters and changed course in the last minute of transmitting data (article).

So sad. I've flown Malaysian Airlines many times, and loved them. And the 777 airplane. :(

I wrote down all her flight info for when she returns but stupidly didn't write down the flight info for when she left and arriving in Vietnam. I just remembered she is flying Singapore airlines and Moscow and then Singapore and then Vietnam. I have been expecting a call since last night from her. I am guessing that all flights may have been delayed.

You can enter her flight number in bing or google and check the status.

What comes to mind regarding this flight is Egypt Air flight 990, in which the pilot deliberately put the plane into a dive and crashed. Some "experts" cite that a limited debris field may indicate that the flight did not break up in flight and may have nose-dived into the sea. It's way early now, but this crash has all the earmarks of terrorism.
