DHS regulations are that the position cannot be one that would normally be filled by a paid employee (e.g. offering to work for free for a company for 2 months with the possibility of future paid employment).

Positions that are normally filled by unpaid volunteers (e.g. volunteering in a church or a pet shelter) are okay.

No you cannot. You can only do volunteer work, which is limited in what you can actually do. You are not allowed to work if the work you do will result in you receiving ANY form of compensation, such as: money, work experience, a paid position once legally able to work, etc.
