Honor Killings

Wow... what a fascinating discussion. There have been some very insightful comments made.

My husband is from a small village in the West Bank, and was raised in a town near *very* conservative Jenin. But he has extensive experience with another, more "Westernized" society so he is much more familiar with "Western" ideas than some Middle Eastern men. Also, while his family is fairly traditional in most things, they do not at all approve of customs like "honor killing." His father is a sheikh (a Sufi) -- he follows Qur'an and Hadith in every aspect of his life. He knows that this practice is in complete violation of the laws of Islam.

Mahmoud and I have indeed discussed "honor killings" on several occasions (even before we became engaged,) as it is not unknown in the West Bank, especially in some of the rural areas and among the less educated. He has told me of some incidents which occurred in his town -- interestingly enough, these were handled in several different ways, but without "honor killing."

I have a few more comments I'd like to add, but they will have to wait until I have a little more time.

Anyway.... just for the record:

#3 - He would certainly be very angry and upset, as this behavior is considered a very serious infraction in Islam. He would probably "disown" her. But then, after some time, I know he would forgive her. No way would he ever physically harm her, and he would lay down his life to protect her from anyone else who wished to harm her.

"Honor killings" are technically classified as pre-meditated murder under Palestinian law (unless committed in the "heat of passion",) a crime which is punishable by death. However, in reality the situation is much like Jordan's -- the law permits perpetrators to claim reasons of "honor" as a defense, and these murderers often receive drastically reduced sentences (especially males, who may serve a year in prison or even less; women who carry out "honor killings" often face much harsher punishment.)

There are several efforts underway to push through new legislation that would address these issues (from both inside and outside Palestinian society) -- however they are pretty much being forgotten in the blur of the ongoing political struggle.

I don't think it has anything to do with size. Many medical studies have shown that its not uncommon for a womans hymen to break before she loses her virginity. There are people that still check the sheet, but this practice is not as common as it once used to be. Bleeding can also happen afterwords in the form of spotting, everyone is different.

not unusual, no. i've seen reports on the same thing - it can be due to a girl being extremely athletic, the hymen being broken during strenuous physical activities (gymnastics, etc).

I know Queen Rania has formed comissioned a human rights to look into honor killings.

Well maybe Jordan will follow with amending their penal code regarding honor killing but highly unlikely considering most of those who oppose changing the law are bedouin tribes. They are the main backers of the Hashemite Kingdom.

OK just got thru talking to him, and his reply was honey you know by now my thought on something like this. Which still didnt answer my question so i continued and used his sister as an example and her daughter. In no uncertain terms would he or his family condon this and he knows of know one tht would . His replay was this is 2007 wht are people thinking. Ifffffff his sister or neice did this after 18 would be their business before 18 his father would have been angry but would deal in a polite way. I belive the other thing entered into the discussions among others on here maybe not seeing is, we arent going to have children of our own ,so the subject of how we would raise them wasnt there as would be for many of you and as it should be.

My husband said killing for any reason is haraam. He does approve of premartial sex, and would be mad at his children for doing so... maybe out of rage beat them or something (but not to a bloody pulp of course)... make sure the word is not spreading of their actions... and try to see if a marriage could be arranged. But in the end, Allah(the God...) is the one who punishes...not us.
