A referendum on the status of Crimea will be held March 16, the region’s deputy prime minister announced. Crimeans will be asked to decide if the autonomous republic stays part of Ukraine or joins Russia.

"The referendum will take place March 16," said the autonomous region’s First Deputy-Premier Rustam Temirgaliev, according to ITAR-TASS.

The new date is two weeks earlier than the one announced last week.

There will be two questions on the ballots.

“The first one: Are you in favor of Crimea becoming a constituent territory of the Russian Federation. The second one: Are you in favor of restoring Crimea’s 1992 constitution,” Temirgaliev said.

According to the 1992 constitution, the autonomous republic is part of Ukraine but has relations with Kiev, defined on the basis of mutual agreements.

Sevastopol residents will take part in the referendum, despite the city enjoying a special status and not officially being a part of Crimea, according to Sergey Shuvainikov, a Crimean MP.

“We will give Sevastopol an opportunity to have its say,” he said, as cited by RIA Novosti.

Meanwhile the Crimean MPs have unanimously voted for the region to become a part of Russia.

"To become part of the Russian Federation as its constituent territory,” says the text of the Crimean parliament’s statement, obtained by RIA Novosti.

(in the voice of Richtofen) ....GOOD!!

It's not so much that I'm anti EU ...it's more that I think this is best. Split 'em up. East & West haven't ever been the best of friends...Let the Nazi lovers in Kiev go with the EU and become another EU teat feeder...

(if you haven't been introduced to Richtofen...here is a sampling of quotes....in the vid)

Yes, I'm aware a Nazi voice is not a match for Crimea but...with Hillary, doing all this nonsense trying to be relevant talk about Putin behaving like Hitler...it fits. &..Richtofen makes me laugh - maybe you did too?

I hope the international community respects the Crimean peoples decision. If they want to join Russia, let them. If they decide to stay with Ukraine, time for Russia to back off.

Call of Duty Zombies, Die Riese! I'd know that voice anywhere.

But the Russian President will defend the vote as legitimate, while in the next breath calling the ousting of Yanukovytch as a right wing coup. sad.png

And the west will call the ousting of Yanukovich legitimate while in the next breath calling Crimea's referendum a left wing plot. Stalemate.

Corrupt politics in Ukraine took the 1991 constitution away from the people of Crimea. That constitution gave them the right to have a referendum on autonomy in which only Crimean people needed to vote. Ironic that corrupt politics will lead to it's return.

From what I understand crimea has no basis for doing this. It's little different than Texas choosing to secede from the United States.

But, though Ukraine's Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk said a referendum would have "no legal grounds at all," there is actual precedent for the decision based on a 1988 law that allowed for self-determination for Soviet republics.

After the U.S.S.R. dissolved at the end of communism, Russia was surrounded by a crescent of independent former Soviet republics.

"The republics of the Soviet Union genuinely broke away peacefully, including Ukraine itself," according to Oxford University's Almond.

The West used similar arguments after the break-up of Yugoslavia to justify Kosovo splitting from Serbia, Almond added — yet another precedent.
