I entered the US with a K-1 visa on November 1st, 2006. I would advise getting the social security card after you get married to avoid having to go back to change her name. The I-94 is the paper that was stapled to her passport by the POE (customs officer) and yes, as a K-1, she did get one.

My fiance arrived on Dec 12 and we got her SS card taken care of. This was we can get her signed up for medical insurance, drivers license, library card on the bank accounts etc. It doesnt take much to get the name change after you are married, you just fill out the paperwork and go to the office.

I took Claudeth to social security after she had been here for about two weeks. She received her card a week later. After we were married we tried to get the name changed but had to wait until we received something from USCIS (her EAD) to change her name. That took about six weeks to get her new card in her married name!

It just seemed easier for us to do it this way and she was able to work because she had the EAD and social security.
