if you want to try something in the garage, I note there is all kinds of interesting mounting gear that attaches to the walls and the CEILING.... I note you two are short, so maybe you have enough ceiling space left over to put things up high? you could rig it where you just push a button and stuff descends from the ceiling, all rigged up with bicycle chains and some sprockets. My dad did that in one of his classes, ages past, just to show his students that it could be done.

oh - shed in the back - here's an idea - go up ! increase the ceiling height - make it multi-level - use the higher bits for storage and the lower bits for workspace. Been a boon about that, converted lower sheds into loft-spaces , 12 to 16 ft high thingies,

and

you could turn part of it into a Princess Playhouse for yer daughter.

Sounds like a do-able project, to me.

Most folk do this because no construction permit is required.

I can find a big house right in NYC....

My house is 3000 ft now, but not a big property.....

You don't need an attorney to sign a pre/post nup. Just notaries. And a witness would be nice.
