Hello everyone!

I have a couple of questions.

We had our first letter back after sending our K1 pack to Dallas. A few weeks later we another letter back saying we need to send in new photos of ourselves. Now in this letter it does say 'passport style' photos which we did send off. However, these were photos that we had taken ourselves with a smartphone. We made sure that the pictures mat the requirements and sent them off.

My first question is should we just take photos in the proper passport photo booths that you found around shopping centres and things like that?

My second question is if this all gets approved and I do move over the US with my fiance, will i need to retake my driving test? I am from the United Kingdom and I hold a Full UK driving licence. Not sure if this may help but I will be moving to the state Kansas. I have tried to look online but not really much joy.

Thank you very much everyone.

Chris

Hi Chris,

First of all - go get real passport photos, it's not worth them delaying your case for the wrong pictures. They're VERY particular about following the rules, do exactly as they say.

And as far as the drivers test goes, it depends what state you will be moving to. For instance, I now live in Michigan and there is no need for a drivers test to get a michigan license - I only needed my Canadian unexpired license and had to do an eye test. What state will you be in when you do move?

Nevermind , I see Kansas is the state. I would google their government laws for drivers license and what exactly you'll need to do...

I needed a bill in my name and my SSN before I could get my license in Michigan. They will have guidelines on their website, just research it!

Just go to the DMV web site and look up requirements for new residents.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

It's important to note that each state has different rules/requirements about when you can apply for a driver's license after moving here from another country. Some states won't even let you get a license without having employment authorization or even a green card. Each state is different, but just to save you the time of waiting in line at the DMV, find out what the requirements are for foreigners. As for taking a road test, that should be something you also find on the DMV website for Kansas.

Thanks for the photo advice. My fiance is coming over to visit me in the UK in about 10 days. We will get some photos and then she can take them back with her and send them off.

I am on the DMV website for Kansas but I am not having much luck. Me and Google go together like chalk and cheese :\

Thanks guys.

Kansas is pretty conservative. If you can't find out the information fairly easily I think you'd be best to assume that you will need to retake the drivers tests. (Written and road.) So you might as well start reading up on Kansas driving rules. It probably won't cost too much and some of the laws are different there (and not just obvious ones like driving on the other side of the road.

Better to be prepared, right?

They need to be US size passport photos, 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm) and meet all the other requirements of a US passport photo as well. Passport photo requirements > http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/english/passports/photos/photo-examples.html

I'm not sure, but I think from memory the pictures should be the American standard of 50cm (2 inch) square.

Oppps not 50cm square. I meant 50mm square.

Thank you, goodnight and may your gods go with you",

Yeah,..... the driving thing...youu will have to get a new license and take the test.

On the K1 Visa....good luck!!!! Just go to a store and they can make the proper 2x2 passport style with a white background....costs is very cheap and will prevent future headaches dealing with American Government!!!!
