My wife is about to fly back to Vietnam after being gone for around 5 years. Of course she/we have been buying a lot of stuff and ave already shipped back a lot a couple of weeks ago so it would arrive before she does. Well now I am told to find a phone to buy for a Niece. I havde asked what kind and other info but all I get is she don't care as it will be used just regular. (Whatever that means) Now I need to find and get one in the next couple of days so was hoping someone here could help me out. I understand that not all phones will work there so how do I know it will? Also what kind of phone store do I need to go and ask about and maybe get one? Please and thank you to any ahead of time for any help on this quest I was given.

You need to buy an unlocked mobile phone....GSM compatibile. That is usually what is needed for countries other than the USA. You can buy a locked phone and watch You-Tube on how to unlock so the SIM works in Vietnam. I have bought a few online via E-bay and never had an issue. I have purchased I-phones and HTC...but GSM compatible.

Vietnam cell phones uses GSM standard and not the CDMA standard.

AT&T and T-mobile uses GSM. An unlocked phone from one of them will work in Vietnam.

Verizon and Sprint phones uses CDMA and will not work in Vietnam.

You can buy a used locked AT&T or T-mobile phone that is no longer on contract and have it unlocked in Vietnam.

Appreciate the info so far and want to say thanks. I am about to run and take care of her in-laws and will start going around to find prices on phones. I will be glad when she is gone and get this stuff over with. I am happy for her though.

We ship back stuff about her month or so but usually vitamins and over the counter pharmacy and of course the ensure stuff. I don't mind as she has 13 brothers and sisters and a lot of nieces and nephews and we want them healthy.

Go to Walmart, you can find an unlocked phone that will work in Vietnam for $30. I bought one for my fiance's mother and it works fine

Any brand of phone there?

The phone I bought for her was a samsung, and I know that my coworker bought a phone from walmart called "Blu" and he took it to vietnam and was able to use it there too. As long as it is a gsm phone and its unlocked it will work. You only need to buy the phone, they WILL try to sell you a calling plan with it.

What a rookie question! rofl.gif

She could buy one here, like I do on a semi-weekly basis.. I keep dropping mine into walls...

There's a phone shop at (approximately) 119 Nguyen Van Cu, Q.1, in TpHCM that has these for a mere 160K VND, unless I bought them out. It's been about 4 months since I was down that way...

Thanks and found a few phones to send back. Her Nephew wanted an IPhone5 for some reason. Also found a place at the mall that had cells locked or unlocked. For some reason just because it came from America the phone seems to be wanted.

Been a long time Mark. Hope all is well.

I think cheap phones are not worth the hassle by the "hai quan" officers. You might as well just go to a phone shop and buy everyone a phone there.
