The answer is going to depend on the court. Some will be able to do it very quickly (less than an hour) because they are well organized. Another, might make you wait in line and such. You'll get a more precise answer by calling the courthouse where you are planning to get married and asking. Or at the very least looking at their website and searching Google.

Another thing to keep in mind is that in New Jersey there is a 72-hour waiting period from the time you apply for the marriage license until it is issued and you can get married:

"There is a 72-hour waiting period before the license is issued. The waiting period begins when the application is filed with the Local Registrar. There is no 72 hour waiting period for a remarriage; however, you must bring a certified copy of your existing marriage."

Ours was scheduled and was late 2 hours because of the judge being held up in court, theres really no set time.

We had to make an appointment with a municipal judge. However, we had to apply for the license 3 days prior to the ceremony.

As that rules/regulations/requirements vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, you should contact your local court for current information. Additionally, check your state's marriage laws as previously mentioned.

Time between applying for the license and doing the deed varies by location (as do the service times I guess) but from my own personal experience (in rural Southern Illinois - twice) from arriving in the parking lot to exiting the building as man and wife took less than 30 minutes - on both occasions.

I was married in my town Borough Court by my town mayor. The whole ceremony took under 20 minutes. Inquire with your town Mayor who may be more than happy to officiate your wedding if a Judge is not available.

* Note if you are in New Jersey, like me, you have to apply for your marriage license. Once you sign the license it is held for 72 hours. After 72 hours the license is released to you and you can then get married afterwards, The license is good for 30 days and costs about $28.00.

* Note I also applied for the marriage license in my town's Borough Hall.
