Hello All!!!

Can my us spouse come to Nigeria with cash amounting to $15,000? She prefers coming with it than sending it through Western union just to save some extra money,we were thinking of sending it through my Ecobank savings account but am not sure Nigerian banks can provide such services, what other means can we use? Thanks for your input.

That's risky. She can send in bits using Money Gram, and not disclose the pin to anybody (not even to you). When she gets to Naija, she could take you to the bank and have you pick up cash as needed.

Last time a friend went home, he sent $2000 4 times totaling $8000. Then he got home and each time he provides a reference order # to his spouse to pick up $2000 each time or as needed. So doing, you limit the risk of losing all funds at the same time.

Money Gram is cheaper than Western Union.

When do they need to bring cash. There are ATM's everywhere they can bring some on purse on their person and the rest just get out the ATM.

Western Union has lost their mind lately with charging the recipient a fee. Your Ecobank transfer can be used but that amount will be stopped and checked this end for sure since its over $10,000. I would keep it in the bank and use ATM.

I would suggest doing a bank wire transfer for an amount less than $10,000 (that seems to be the magic number that raises flags) and then carrying the rest or getting out via ATM once in Nigeria.

We have US$ accounts in both Nigeria and the US and have not had any problems with wire transfers. Her bank here in the US will tell her what details are needed from your Nigerian bank in order to process the international wire transfer. There is usually a charge of $30-40 for the transfer. You have to have a Dorm Account at your bank in Nigeria that is for US Dollars--you can't transfer it into a Naira account.

If she is taking more than 10k fill out and submit a form 105 http://www.fincen.gov/forms/files/fin105_cmir.pdf

Failure to do so can lead to the money being held while they investigate the source
