There are some of those, yes. But I guess you can find that species on these shores, too.

Honestly, though, knowing what I know and having seen what I have seen about Russia, I can't help but wonder how they ever got a man into orbit. And back.

They got their own man to run their program, not an import ;)

They don't build fine sophisticated equipment - they build stuff that works and continues to work, under less than ideal conditions. You would surprised how many US weapon systems are based on Soviet designs, every bit as much as the Soviets copied ours, and made them actually function. Soviets were the innovators in rotary wing aircraft.

Baikonur is rather different, weather wise, than Cape Canaveral. ;)

This is true, too. We had Russian equipment in the military that was built just after WWII. And that stuff worked pretty well. Whenever it didn't, all it took was a hammer and pair of pliers to make it work. But that's not true for all they built. There's been a good bit of stuff that never really worked at all. We just had to pretend that it did...
