Hi! We need help bc we are confused on how to apply for SSN. We are here in CALIFORNIA we got married 1 week after i arrived here. We went to the social security officer but he looked confused on what procedure to take bc we have a k1 visa so he asked us to wait or come back. Then the second time we went back we are already married so the officer said that we need to report first to the immigration apply for change of status then once everything is ok come back to the social security office to apply for the number and which by the way applying for a change of status will take a while so we are hoping that maybe even if we are already married is there a

Way that they can process my SSN? We need your help guys bc it is hard to have anything done without the SSN. The people in our SS office looks either confuse or don't really have no idea. We want to hear from you guys before my 1-94 expires. Salamat.

Some SSA workers have no idea what to do once the K-1 holder marries. There is nothing different to do, but they have no clue about how immigration procedures work. Try applying in your maiden name so it matches your K-1 visa, I-94 and info in their system. Try another SSA, if there is another office not too far away, or ask to speak to a supervisor. Show them the print out found in the SSN here on VJ that shows a K-1 is a legal alien allowed to work and eligible for an SSN. The marriage does not nullify your K-1 visa entrance to the US. In the end, it may end up that you have to wait until you get your EAD/AP in your married name after filing for AOS.

Fill out your application in the same name that is in your passport, and make sure you mark that you are a LEGAL ALIEN ALLOWED TO WORK. All the SSA employee needs to do, is enter your information into the system. It will show on their system that yes you are eligible for a SSN, and they can complete the application for you.

If they are really clueless, either ask for a supervisor or go to another office.
