I moved to NY in December 7th. For the first month I stayed at an apartment provided by the company until January 6th. I signed a lease during that time but I had to stay at a hotel until the lease started on January 15th. I will be applying for Naturalization on March 10th and because of the 3 months state residency rule I am being overly cautious about what I type in the residence history. So in my case what should I do?

- Don't mention the hotel stay and leave 9 day lapse between January 6th- January 15th.

- Mention the hotel stay and get a bill from the hotel to prove that you indeed stayed there.

- Don't mention the hotel stay but avoid leaving a 9 day lapse by playing with start/end dates?

Also another thing is that for the first 3 years I lived at the same apartment complex in PA (i.e. same street address) but different apartment numbers. I have only one signed lease which is for 3 years. Should I mention all the 3 apartments I lived or just tell the last one I was in?

Complete the form as it happened. I would also make certain you have filed your most recent address using the AR-11 on-line form before filing the N400. I would send in the application after the 15th of March just to be on the safe side. Put in the different apartment numbers and list the hotel stay. You do not have to prove any of the addresses, but you should have completed the AR-11 change of address for each move and then it would be documented. I would be as truthful and correct as possible when completing any form used by the US government. For immigration, any misrepresentation can have serious consequences and is not worth the risk IMHO.

Good luck,

Dave

I agree, don't "adjust dates on the application" to suit your needs. Use the real dates and you should be fine. "Adjusting dates" is visa fraud...you don't even want to go there now do you?

Good luck and God Bless

I was more wondering if I even needed to worry about adjusting dates. Looks like just writing everything as it happened is fine and hotel stay won't matter. Thanks.

Of course, the hotel stay counts towards your residency. You should never "adjust dates". Just put down where you have "resided" since arriving there. One resides at a hotel just like any other domicile.

How about staying in the hotel for 2 months for work purposes but never permanently moved, but goes back to a permanent house after the job. Do I need to explain that to my IO or just not mention it at all?
