They usually do; it's specifically mentioned on the I-485 and I believe some immigrant visa forms, also.

Hello,

My husband has been in the US since 2010. We completed the I-485 Adjustment of Status in 2010. As you all probably know, at the bottom of the 485 form is a statement saying we understand that by signing the form, we are giving permission for USCIS to report our info to SS and for my husband to be registered for SS. After the 485 form was accepted, we never received any communication regarding the SS and assumed all was well. I had heard that people received notices saying they 'failed to register' so since we received nothing like this, we figured all was set. I also hadn't realized there was a SS number we should have received so I wasn't waiting for that. Cut to now, we are trying to get his citizenship and when we went to get his SS number we discovered that USCIS never sent his info for registration.

Has anyone ever had the same problem (USCIS did NOT register you for SS, as explained on the 485) and how did it turn out? We spoke to SS and they said we needed to send a copy of our 485 form to them for review. This was definitely not a case of 'willfully' and 'knowingly' avoiding SS as we thought this entire time that he was registered. What are chances (typically) that USCIS will accept the 485 form as evidence in these cases?

Thanks for any info you can offer.

Failing to register for selective service is covered under the "good moral conduct" part of the interview. It takes five years to re-establish good moral character/conduct and so if you search around, you'll see that most lawyers recommend that you apply after you turn 31. After that point, the "I didn't know I had to register" excuse will generally be accepted. If you apply before then, there's a good chance they'll want a better reason than that.

Personally, if I were in your situation, I'd keep my green card until I turned 31 and then apply.

Immigration does not register them for Selective Service---

They sure do, although I'm not certain how consistent they are with it! Like I mentioned earlier, I did register on my own, but USCIS also signed me up without warning, so I got two separate confirmation letters from the SSS with two different registration numbers.

I do not remember this being the case, wonder of they changed the form.

To the OP I would have thought supplying a copy of the original form submitted with that clause would work.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
